WWE legend John Cena and Golden Globe Award-winning actor Idris Elba have signed up for their next movie roles, and they will be back onscreen together.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cena will re-team with 'The Suicide Squad' co-star Elba in the upcoming new action comedy, "Heads of State." The project is currently in the works for Amazon Prime Video.
John Cena Teams Up With Idris Elba For New Action Comedy
Cena recently starred opposite Elba in 2021's DC Universe blockbuster, "The Suicide Squad," with Cena portraying Peacemaker. Cena would later go on to reprise the role in a TV spinoff, "Peacemaker," on HBO Max.
To add to the DC Films connection, the project is being produced by Peter Safran under his Safran Company banner. Safran was recently tapped to serve as the Co-CEO of DC Studios earlier this week opposite "The Suicide Squad" filmmaker James Gunn.
Amazon previously acquired the project during what was described as a "competitive Zoom presentation" in October 2020. Ilya Naishuller, director of the 2021 sleeper hit "Nobody" and "Hardcore Henry," is attached to direct the action comedy feature. The Safran Company's John Rickard is also producing the film, which was initially written by Harrison Query ("My Wife and I Bought a Ranch"). A later draft was reportedly penned by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec ("Beverly Hills Cop 4").
According to THR, the project is described as "Air Force One" meets "Midnight Run," with an odd-couple pairing who get in over their heads for a high-stakes conflict. Since "Air Force One" involved terrorists taking the United States President's plane under siege, it raises the question if either Cena or Elba will be playing the President of the United States for the film.
Cena and Elba Experiencing A Ton Of Demand
Cena and Elba both appear to be very hot superstars at the moment, with their talents being under demand, keeping them very busy across film and television. Cena is currently slated to return for another season of DC's "Peacemaker." The two performers also had great onscreen chemistry with one another in "The Suicide Squad," so it makes sense why filmmakers and producers would want to pair them up again in a new action-comedy feature. They played off one another very well in their roles of Peacemaker and Bloodsport for the film.
He's also working on a new hybrid live-action and CG-animated "Looney Tunes" project called "Coyote v. Acme." The high-concept comedy will see the one and only Wile E. Coyote pursuing a legal case against the ACME Corporation for all their products always backfiring on him while hunting the Road Runner. Cena will star as the CEO of the Acme Corporation. The film is expected to arrive in theaters on July 21, 2023.
Meanwhile, Elba is attached to return to his award-winning role as DCI John Luther in a new "Luther" movie that's currently in the works for writer Neil Cross and director Jamie Payne that will continue the events of the series. "Luther" does not yet have a release date.
Amazon's "Heads of State" does not yet have a release date, but it will likely debut on Amazon Prime Video later on.
