Matthew Perry Shelled Out Big Bucks
The actor most notable for Friends has been sharing his truths regarding his privileged life and how he has taken advantage of it. “I’ve probably spent $9 million or something trying to get sober,” he guesses.
Perry sat down with the New York Times where he admits that he has finally been the most successful he has been in his journey to stay sober but it cost him a whole lotta money. He admits that the $9 million he spent is more than the average addict could ever afford and notes that he was probably paying for “the gift of anonymity.”
This is just the latest tidbit to come out from the actor’s new book "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing."
Matthew Perry Became Obsessed With Random Things
The actor also shared that being an addict obviously made him act out of character. He was taking almost 55 Vicodin a day and he claims he even became obsessed with Chris Farley’s death.
"Then, Chris Farley died," wrote The Whole Nine Yards actor. Farley too had an addiction problem and succumbed to his addiction, shocking the world. This freaked out Perry. "His disease had progressed faster than mine had. (Plus, I had a healthy fear of the word 'heroin,' a fear we did not share.)"
He then recalls, "I punched a hole through Jennifer Aniston's dressing room wall when I found out." He also pointed out that when he finally had to promote the movie he and Farley made together, Almost Heroes,
"I found myself publicly discussing his death from drugs and alcohol," he wrote in the book. "I was high the entire time,” he admits. It was embarrassing now that he looks back on it.
Matthew Perry’s Memoir Is A Scary Journey
Perry also reveals in the memoir that he was extremely close to death. "The doctors told my family that I had a two-percent chance to live," he writes. "That's the time I really came close to my life ending. I was put on an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs.”
Perry continued, “Every doctor says it's a Hail Mary. No one survives that. So, the big question is why? Why was I the one that survived? There has to be some kind of reason."
He went on to shockingly admit, "No one knew,” of his addiction. “Not my family, my friends, no one.”
