Actors Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson announced that they had made their way back to the United States after staying in quarantine for two weeks in Australia after being diagnosed with COVID-19, or coronavirus.
The pair were diagnosed while overseas and watched from a distance as their fellow Americans struggled with social distancing and how long to keep away from family and friends.
Hanks, who has been updating fans via social media, announced on Twitter that the pair had left Queensland after their weeks of self-isolation.
“Hey, Folks…We’re home now and, like the rest of America, we carry on with sheltering in place and social distancing. Many, many thanks to everyone in Australia who looked after us. Their care and guidance made possible our return to the USA. And many thanks to all of you who reached out with well wishes. Rita and I so appreciate it. Hanx,” the actor tweeted.
Hanks and Wilson were some of the first American actors to be diagnosed with the rapidly spreading virus.

Hanks initial announcement about his condition came as a shock to his many fans in America who were saddened to hear about the star’s condition.”
“Hello, folks. [Wilson] and I are down here in Australia,” Hanks wrote on March 11. “We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive.”
Hanks updated fans after a week in isolation following the coronavirus diagnosis:
“One week after testing Positive, in self-isolation, the symptoms are much the same. No fever but the blahs,” he wrote according to Cheat Sheet. “Folding the laundry and doing the dishes leads to a nap on the couch.”
This first positive update comes as a relief one week later:
The star is quarantined in Australia with wife Rita Wilson, where the pair were both tested and found to have the highly contagious CoVid-19.
Tom and wife Rita also continued to encourage their fans in the face of the worldwide virus.
“Hey, folks. Two weeks after our first symptoms and we feel better,” Hanks wrote. “Sheltering in place works like this: You don’t give it to anyone – You don’t get it from anyone. Common sense, no? Going to take awhile, but if we take care of each other, help where we can, and give up some comforts… this, too, shall pass. We can figure it out. Hanx.”
