John Mayer Hilariously Mocked Celebrities That Sang Imagine Cover

Recently there has been a viral video going around featuring stars like Gal Gadot, Sarah Silverman, Jimmy Fallon and more celebrities singing a cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine”.

The aim of the cover was to help spread somewhat of a positive outlook amid the recent coronavirus pandemic. However, this backfired in a major way. And after the video was uploaded, many fans were outraged that celebrities could sing a song that was offensive to those who are struggling during the pandemic.

John Mayer took to Instagram on a mini-episode of his on-going series “Current Mood” in which sarcastically mentioned how he was asked by “Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot to be a part of the collaboration of Imagine.

“Hey everyone, John here with a Current Mood Mini. So, this week, Gal Gadot and a bevy of other celebrities released a rendition of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine.’ It went far and wide across the internet,” Mayer said.

“I have to come clean about something,” he continued. “They actually asked me to be a part of it, and I totally misunderstood the assignment, and thought they wanted me to sing ‘Imagine‘ by Ariana Grande, from her 2019 smash hit album, 'Thank U, Next.' They were nice enough to send over a cut. Take a look.”

The video then shows Gadot’s original video and cuts to various celebrities singing including, Kristen Wiig and Jamie Dornan. However, the video then cuts to Mayer singing the ‘wrong’ from Ariana Grande’s song and he sings, “Me with no makeup/ You in the bath tub/ Bubbles and bubbly.”

To indirectly emphasize that the video was meant to mock the celebrities, the clip continues showing James Marsden and Sarah Silverman singing John Lennon’s tune and then another cut back to Mayer who sings Grande’s lines, “Imagine a world like that/ Imagine a world like that.”

“Am I sorry? Not even close,” Mayer said. “But am I not sorry? Well, now that’s a whole different question with a whole different answer. You’re damn right I’m not sorry.”

“And by the way, everything Ariana sings about in the song, sure sounds good right about now,” Mayer concludes. “We’ll see you tomorrow night on Current Mood: Live. Until then, take good care of yourselves, smile when you can, laugh when the opportunity comes up, and we’ll see you soon.”

Joe Rogan was also another celebrity to add his two cents on the video saying in a video, “This is not the time, when everyone's granny is dying, you f——— idiot, to sing, ‘Imagine there's no heaven.’ It's such a dumb move.”

He continued talk about why he though it was a terrible idea for a video at such a time as this saying, “If I'm friends with her … I would have to say, ‘Listen, you're awesome. I think you're great. But that is a ridiculous idea.’ It is so lacking in self-awareness and so ridiculous. I mean, Granny died choking on her own vomit, but I feel like the world's better because Gal Gadot's so pretty. There are some people who get real self-indulgent and real self-righteous with that social media. It's exposed a lot of celebrities for being real dorks.”
