On Netflix's Love is Blind, fifteen men and fifteen women dated one another, and some even fell in love and got engaged-- all without seeing each other. Of course, this reality TV premise led to lots of drama among the participants. One of the most dramatic (yet lovable) couples to come out of the show were Damian Powers and Giannina Gibelli. Although they loved each other, they argued quite a bit, and one source of conflict for them was the fact that Damian's parents refused to meet Giannina. In a recent interview with Esquire, Giannina revealed a lot about her experience, including why her would-be in-laws refused to meet her.

When asked about not meeting her in-laws, Giannina revealed why they made the decision not to appear on the show. Honestly, it's pretty reasonable: "It sucks that they didn't want to, but they knew they’d have no control over how they were gonna be portrayed," she explained. "None of us did. So it was like, we're just not gonna put ourselves in that situation. And I totally get that." It was for the same reason that Damian's parents skipped the wedding, too.

Giannina's parents had a bit of a different reaction to the whole situation than Damian's did: "They're just as free spirited, just as open, just as opinionated as I am," reasoned Giannina. "I don't think they were surprised at all when I told them that I was doing this. And they were fully there to support me. They really liked how they saw me with Damian, they read vibes just like I do, so they liked his energy, they were really just supportive and they still are to this day, which is amazing."
Those of us who watched Love is Blind will never forget the images of Giannina fleeing the wedding in her white dress or of her mother running after her and shouting her name. Although the experience was certainly heartbreaking for Giannina, she acknowledges that it was almost as bad for her mother, too: "She says to this day it pains her to see her baby up there being rejected like that. And she's my mom, she's just gonna be the most supportive and on my side as much as possible."

Despite all the heartbreak, Giannina thinks that the social experiment was worth it, and recommends it to any singles who are looking to find love and learn more about themselves. "What I learned from this whole experience is you learn so much about yourself, the things that you value, how you are as a person, and how you love, and that in itself was worth it. And the fact that I was able to connect with someone else was a double jackpot because I fell in love with myself and then I fell in love with someone else." Giannina and Damian are still together (just not engaged), Giannina has switched career paths to focus on being "creative," and all the main cast members are still happily in touch.
