Geena Davis Breaks Silence On Uncomfortable Encounter With Bill Murray

Actress Virginia Davis, best known as Geena Davis, is a well-known Oscar-winning actress who has worked with many Hollywood greats over her long career.

The 66-year-old actress recently released her new book, “Dying of Politeness: A Memoir,” in which she gives an honest look at some encounters that she had in her career, including with “Ghostbusters” actor Bill Murray, who was accused of inappropriate conduct on the set of Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut, “Being Mortal” earlier this year.

The “Thelma & Louise” star told PEOPLE that the incident happened when she was working with Bill Murray, now 72, on the set of the film “Quick Change,” which was released in 1990 and also featured appearances from Tony Shalhoub, Randy Quaid, and Philip Bosco.

Davis told the publication that she’s “never spoken about it publicly,” referring to an incident that she mentions in her book. She alleged that she was introduced to the “Caddyshack” actor in a hotel room, where he “insisted” on using a massage device on her.

"I said no multiple times, but he wouldn't relent," Davis wrote in her memoir. "I would have had to yell at him and cause a scene if I was to get him to give up trying to force me to do it; the other men in the room did nothing to make it stop. I realized with profound sadness that I didn't yet have the ability to withstand this onslaught — or to simply walk out."

During this encounter, Davis said that Murray "placed the thing on my back for a total of about two seconds."

While the two were still working on the film together in New York, the “Stuart Little” star said that the “Groundhog Day” actor verbally berated her in front of the crew while she was waiting for the wardrobe department to fix her outfit.

"There were easily more than 300 people there — and Murray was still screaming at me, for all to see and hear," she wrote in her memoir.

"For publicity, I saw him after we made the movie, but other than that, I haven't seen him or spoken to him," Davis told PEOPLE. "I figure it's sort of rather universally known that he could be difficult to work with. And so I don't feel like I'm busting him in a way that will necessarily shock him. I think he knows very well the way he can behave."

The publication also referenced a 2021 interview with “Elementary” actress Lucy Liu. While speaking to the Los Angeles Times' Asian Enough podcast, Liu recalled how Murray was unable to attend the rehearsal for a scene in 2000’s “Charlie’s Angels.” When he got to set to film the actual scene, Liu claims that Murray singled her out and berated her in front of the crew as well.

"As we're doing the scene, Bill starts to sort of hurl insults, and I won't get into the specifics, but it kept going on and on," she alleged. "I was, like, 'Wow, he seems like he's looking straight at me.' I couldn't believe that [the comments] could be towards me because what do I have to do with anything majorly important at that time? I literally do the look around my shoulder thing, like, who is he talking to behind me? I say, 'I'm so sorry. Are you talking to me?' And clearly, he was, because then it started to become a one-on-one communication."

"Some of the language was inexcusable and unacceptable, and I was not going to just sit there and take it,” Liu added. “So, yes, I stood up for myself, and I don't regret it.”

While she was attending the premiere of Jordan Peele's "Nope" in July, Deadline caught up with Emmy-award-winning actress Keke Palmer and asked what she knew about the misconduct allegations against Bill Murray on set.

Palmer said that she had a “wonderful time filming” and called Aziz Ansari “one of the coolest people that I ever met.”

“That was the coolest experience, but I don’t know anything more than that,” she added.
