Meghan and Harry have already gone back to Canada despite the fact that their official departure from royal duties, or ‘Megxit,’ will be March 31.
They claimed one of the reasons for their stepping down was due to the British press and the criticism they’ve received for things they’ve done and said.
The hypocrisy over their use of private jets after telling people to protect the environment, and Meghan writing messages of support for sex workers on bananas, were two major points of criticism.
Despite them leaving, it appears the Sussexes are still making major PR mistakes, with the most recent being an Instagram post about the coronavirus.
They posted a photo of an inspiring quote, and captioned it, “These are uncertain times. And now, more than ever, we need each other. We need each other for truth, for support, and to feel less alone during a time that can honestly feel quite scary.”
It continued, “There are so many around the world who need support right now, who are working tirelessly to respond to this crisis behind the scenes, on the frontline, or at home. Our willingness, as a people, to step up in the face of what we are all experiencing with COVID-19 is awe-inspiring. This moment is as true a testament there is to the human spirit.”
One part of the lengthy post said, “We will be sharing information and resources to help all of us navigate the uncertainty: from posting accurate information and facts from trusted experts, to learning about measures we can take to keep ourselves and our families healthy, to working with organisations that can support our mental and emotional well-being.”
This was one of the pieces that was particularly scrutinized, with many claiming it was ridiculous for them to assume we would go to their Instagram for information about the virus.
One top comment said: “I just had to cancel my wedding so don’t you dare preach to me about what it means to sacrifice for the greater good… I’m done with the entitled sh*t from these two.”
Another Instagram user replied: “You abandoned your country! Empty words. Go walk your dog. Leave us alone.”
Clearly, many felt the post was out of touch and preachy, something the couple have been criticized for in the past.
Royal watcher Richard Kay wrote a piece for The Daily Mail in which he compared the post to the Queen’s recent statement, which was widely regarded as caring and understanding the mood of the U.K. and the world.
Kay wrote, “How different from the clichéd and frankly meaningless contribution from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their Sussex Royal website. There may be a time and place for facile and homespun messages, but their preachy post showed a fundamental misunderstanding of the mystique of the Royal Family.”
If the Sussexes thought they would hit the ground running with their new life and new brand, becoming super successful right away, they were clearly naive.
Perhaps someone will advise them to quit with the preachy Instagram posts and stick to what they know; celebrity dinner parties and hiking in Canada.
