Rapper Jay-Z and musician Beyoncé are the ultimate power couple. They easily have one of the most famous relationships across the globe, not to mention one of the most powerful combinations in music ever to exist. The pair reportedly met back in the late 90s early 2000s, back when Beyoncé was just a mere 18-years-old. The pair quickly began dating, although kept things private with neither committing to their courtship. Beyoncé told Oprah Winfrey in an interview, “We were friends first for a year and a half before we went on any dates. We were on the phone for a year and a half, and that foundation is so important for a relationship.”

The dynamic duo began collaborating on music together, with songs like Crazy in Love, which eventually landed the pair a Grammy for best R&B track. Though years later, the pair still hadn’t admitted they were dating, despite the fact they were seen out-and-about canoodling. It wasn’t until 2004 that the duo made their very first red carpet debut together at the MTV VMAs in Miami. However, people had already assumed that the two were confirmed dating anyway.

Fast forward a decade, and we have the infamous elevator fight which was caught on camera between younger sister Solange Knowles and Jay-Z. Rumors began to swirl that Jay-Z was unfaithful, and it wasn’t until Beyoncé’s next album Lemonade dropped that fans began wondering if the rumors were true. Jay-Z eventually dropped his own album 4:44, and seemingly was apologizing to Beyoncé for his infidelity. Jay-Z then went on to explain “We were using our art almost like a therapy session.”

After fans were questioning who exactly is “Becky with the good hair” and while Jay-Z never referenced specifically who it was he cheated with, the looming idea of divorce remained. Yet, Jay-Z explained why he and Beyoncé chose to stay together after all of the ups and downs. Jay-Z told the New York Times that Beyoncé is his soulmate and “it’s the person I love. And you can be in love with someone, you can love someone, and if you haven’t experienced love and you don’t understand it and you don’t have the tools to move forward, you’re going to have complications, period.”
