Fiona Apple Speaks On Her Toxic Relationship With Paul Thomas Anderson

Fiona Apple speaks on her tumultuous relationship with Oscar-nominated director Paul Thomas Anderson.

In a new interview with The New Yorker, Apple stated that Anderson was “coldly critical, contemptuous” during their three-year relationship.

Apple and Anderson began dating in 1997 at the start of her career before breaking up in 2000. Throughout their relationship, the pair collaborated on their work along with doing drugs such as coke and ecstasy together.

Around the same time, the Grammy-nominated singer had begun to drink heavily.

Throughout their toxic relationship, Apple remembered Anderson always having harsh words, telling her she was a bad partner and making her look unstable. On one occasion, he shoved her out of a car.

After losing the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1998, Apple remembered the celebrated director throwing a chair across the room. “Fuck this, this is not a good relationship,” Apple recalled thinking at the time.

After the incident, Apple decided to stay with her dad.

The pair would date for two more tumultuous years, the singer did make it a point to state that Anderson never hit her.

With the pair's recreational drug use, Apple admitted one moment between Anderson and fellow director Quentin Tarantino made her never touch cocaine ever again.

She reminisced about spending ‘one excruciating night’ at Tarantino’s house where she had to listen to coked-up Tarantino and Anderson brag about their accomplishments.

Apple jokingly stated, "Every addict should just get locked in a private movie theatre with Q.T. and P.T.A. on coke, and they’ll never want to do it again."

This incident was one of many she remembers from her time with Anderson.

Apple went on to call her romance with Anderson “painful and chaotic.”

After they met, she recalled the time Anderson followed her to Hawaii to “solidified” their relationship. The gesture is reminiscent of Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love” protagonist Barry Egan (played by Adam Sandler) does the same thing with the love of his life, Lena Leonard ( played by Emily Watson).

Apple stated, “I remember going to meet him at the bar at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and he was laughing at me because I was marching around on what he called my ‘determined march to nowhere.’”

Along with her relationship with Anderson, Apple spoke on her relationships with troubled comedian Louis C.K. and magician David Blaine.

The “Criminal” singer mentioned was “disturbed” to find Blaine's name amongst those who were listed in Jeffrey Epstein’s black book.

Even though she initially supported C.K. a note asking him to try harder, she became more critical of him after getting to know one of his accusers, Rebecca Corry, through her advocacy organization for pit bulls.

In a text to The New Yorker, the singer described her frustration over the comedian’s lack of self-scrutiny. “I SHAKE when I have to think and write about myself,” she wrote. “It’s scary to go there but I go there. He is so WEAK.”
