Rebecca Black Recalls Being 'Scammed' Into Endorsing This Political Candidate

According to singer Rebecca Black, her family was scammed into entering the world of politics by a distant family friend. The artist rose to global fame in 2011 after releasing the mostly criticized music video for her song, "Friday."

Black has released several other songs over the years and recently talked about an incident that occurred when she was younger. The 25-year-old revealed that when she was a teenager, a relative convinced her family to travel to Mexico for a meet and greet session involving the key to the city.

Instead of the promised meet and greet, the artist was taken to a different location and asked several questions which served to endorse the then-presidential candidate, Enrique Peña Nieto.

"Friday" artist Black revealed that when she was 14, she was scammed, along with her mother, into endorsing Nieto, the previous president of Mexico. The 25-year-old spoke on the decade-old incident on her TikTok, explaining that a "distant family relative" planned out the entire situation.

In the video of almost 2.4 million views, Black claimed that at the time, she and her mother were asked to come to a "fan club from a small town in Mexico" to do a meet and greet.

The duo agreed; however, when they made the trip, it was pretty evident that the explained scenario was a lie. The artist recalled, "They took us to this fancy house and then ushered us into a room full of men in suits."

Black further explained that she and her mother, who moved to the US from Mexico, were escorted into a big room with around 20 people already seated. The room's inhabitants reportedly had microphones in from of them and proceeded to ask the then 14-year-old and her mother about Mexican politics.

Black revealed that they also asked the mother-daughter duo about their opinions on Mexican voting rights. Nieto, who was a presidential candidate at the time, was eventually brought into the conversation, and the artist was asked what she thought about him.

The 25-year-old explained that she was initially confused because she didn't know who the person was; however, to avoid looking "stupid," she tried to give suitable answers. Black said, "So I'm like, yeah, great, he's great, voting is great, I'm sure it'll all be great … Not really knowing what I'm talking about, but I'm literally 14."

In the TikTok video, the "Saturday" singer revealed that she eventually realized what had gone down on their way home. Black said on the journey back, she scrolled through her Twitter and then discovered that the meeting, as well as answers to the questions, helped to endorse Nieto, who was the presidential candidate of Mexico.

The 25-year-old said, "I realize that my entire family was just scammed by this distant relative, who worked for his presidential campaign, into endorsing the presidential candidate of Mexico. And the world thinks I've done it as a 14-year-old, and I've never heard of this man in my life."

Black's endorsement seemed to have benefited Nieto's campaign as the politician went on to win the election that year and came on as the president of Mexico. His tenure, however, had a large number of political issues which questioned his integrity.

In August this year, the attorney general of the office of Mexico revealed that it had launched an investigation into the dealings of the former president, Nieto. The news came weeks after complaints against him were filed by the local anti-money laundering agency. The agency accused Nieto of money laundering as well as illicit enrichment.

Via the press release, the attorney general office said, "Based on complaints filed by treasury authorities, an investigation folder for money laundering and illegal international transfers was created."

The former president was suspected of receiving "at least three suspicious transfers" of over 26 million pesos (US $1.3 million). The amount was reportedly deposited by a blood relative of the former president to an account in Spain, which was coincidentally the country where Nieto moved to after his tenure expired.

Nieto is also being probed for illicit enrichment, a complaint previously filed by an individual to look into the former president's assets. In response to the accusations, Nieto announced that he looked forward to the authorities' compliance in allowing him to defend himself and clarify the source of his wealth and assets.
