Shortly after fans got confirmation that "Love Is Blind" stars Deepti Vempati and Kyle Abrams were an official item, they found out that the relationship had already ended. And while both confirmed the breakup on Instagram, fans were left wondering just what happened. Vempati, 31, recently spoke to PEOPLE about their short-lived romance and what's next for the reality TV star.
Vempati Said The Bond With Abrams Began In The Pods While Filming The Reality Show
"I think it's important that I let people know that Kyle and I had a special bond in the pods. He was my number two person [after Abhishek "Shake" Chatterjee]. And so we really built this friendship foundation over the last year," she said at Netflix's Date Night press junket. "But when we did 'After the Altar,' it really forced us to address our feelings for each other because we were tip-toeing around them because we didn't want to cross that line, because we didn't want to lose each other as best friends. And so it was a tough thing, but we knew that there's feelings there, so if we didn't try, it would be hard."
It was no secret that the two were besties and spent a lot of time together after filming the show and many fans assumed they were a couple long before they admitted to it. Once the reunion special aired, the couple got the green light to open up to their fans and followers about the relationship that officially began in April. But by that time, the couple already split. As viewers of the show saw, Abrams asked Vempati to be his girlfriend in the last moments of the final episode of the three-part special.
The Couple's "Energy Was Shifting"
Vempati said by early summer the two "saw that the energy was shifting." "There was so much pressure on us, we weren't talking about our wants and needs," she told PEOPLE. "And I think we just realized that being friends is really a much better path for us to be better people, and to grow, we needed to grow our separate ways and figure out what life has to offer."
The reality star explained that being in the spotlight may have had something to do with the relationship ending. "On the one hand, we weren't able to share a lot of our memories with everyone because 'After the Altar' hadn't aired yet. So it was hard when you are getting a lot of pressure, and there's so many opinions, and people are like, 'Oh my God, we want to make this work,' all of that. It was definitely tough," she said. "But ultimately, there was other issues than just the pressure of the public. And so I write about that in my book. But yeah, I think it's normal to leave unhealthy relationships."
Vempati Tells Her Story In Her Book "I Choose Myself"
Vempati's book, "I Choose Myself" became exclusively available on Amazon a week ago. She announced the book's release on her Instagram page in a post captioned, "The day has finally come—where I put my heart and soul out there for you to read. I’ve said this before: vulnerability connects us. I’m choosing to share moments of my entire life, both dark and light. I hope that by sharing my story, it resonates with at least one person out there to learn from my journey. I also hope that it inspires you to see that change is possible. Growth is possible. Choosing yourself is possible."
Her book details how the relationship between the two reality stars progressed from best friends to dating. She explained that the two were spending unhealthy amounts of time together and that she felt "insecure" about Abrams "flirtatious nature" with other women. And despite how their relationship ended, Vempati isn't completely counting out the possibility of bringing back the friendship they shared.
"We were on completely different pages. It was easier to end things and remain friends than try to mend this mess," she wrote. "I think it's really hard to go back to the exact type of friendship that we used to have once you cross that line. Maybe down the road we can. But as of right now, we're just doing our own thing."
