Dolezal rose to fame in 2015 after it was revealed that she'd lied about her race for years, pretending to be a black woman when she was actually white. During an interview on NBC's "Today," at the time, Dolezal claimed that she'd begun identifying as a black person when she was five.

The former NAACP president said she'd always used brown crayons to depict herself as a child instead of peach or white. Dolezal also said that she'd never changed her appearance or used "blackface" to pass for a black woman but simply identified as African American.

She said, "I don't put on blackface as a performance... I certainly don't stay out of the sun." Dolezal's sons, Isaiah and Franklin, were also present during the interview, and she said they identify her "culturally" as a Black woman.
