Walt Disney Studios and 20th Century Studios re-released "Avatar" over the weekend, and it didn't take long for the film to take the No. 1 slot at the global box office over the weekend, almost 13 years after its original release in December 2009.

Comscore recorded the movie earning $10 million domestically and $20.5 million overseas for a combined global take of $30.5 million. With the box office from its theatrical re-release, "Avatar" keeps its title as the highest-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office ahead of Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame." Domestically, the film still sits at No. 4 behind "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens," "Avengers: Endgame," and "Spider-Man: No Way Home."

According to a press release, about 75% of the film's overseas box office came from the 3D/4D/IMAX formats for the release. By comparison, "Avengers: Endgame" only brought in around 27%.

For the weekend domestic box office, "Avatar" opened No. 3 behind Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling" at No. 1 with $19.2 million and "The Woman King" at No. 2 with $11.1 million. The Cameron film was third with $10.0 million for the weekend.

James Cameron Still Going Strong At The Box Office

Many have questioned if fans and moviegoers will still return to the "Avatar" franchise after over 10 years away at the box office. The fact that the original movie released almost 13 years ago can still top the worldwide box office shows that there is still interest in the franchise and likely some box office muscle to go along with it. It looks like there is still interest in the next chapter of the film series and the world and characters that Cameron has created.

Written and directed by Cameron, the epic sci-fi, action-adventure movie stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver.

Worthington, Saldana, Lang, and Weaver will be returning for the upcoming sequel. However, this time around, Weaver will be playing the role of Kiri, the teenage Na'vi child of Jake Sully and Neytiri. Cameron is back behind the director's chair for the sequel, with a script he co-wrote with Josh Friedman.

"Avatar" is currently playing in about 1,860 theaters in the US. Fans will once again be able to return to the world of Pandora on December 16 for "Avatar: The Way of Water" when it opens in theaters. After multiple delays, this will be the first of four planned sequels for the franchise, with Cameron planning all the way up to "Avatar 5" due out later on.
