Why Adam Driver Kept His Son A Secret For Two Years

Adam Driver has enjoyed a meteoric rise to stardom over the past couple of years. After first appearing as Lena Dunham's boyfriend in the HBO series Girls, he has since gone on to appear as Kylo Ren in the Star Wars franchise and was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Marriage Story.

However, fans still know little about his personal life, which is no mean feat in this era of social media.

In fact, some fans might be surprised to know that he's married - and that he has a son.

Driver married actress Joanne Tucker in 2013. The pair met when they were studying at the Juilliard School for Drama in the early 2000s.

Although Driver has kept details of his marriage private, he did tell Broadway.com that Tucker "taught me what Gouda cheese is... and that you shouldn’t talk with your mouth full and spit on the sidewalk."

He says that in turn, he expanded her reading beyond The New Yorker and taught her "about Rolling Stone and how it could be interesting and entertaining."

Driver first mentioned a child in a 2017 interview with W Magazine.

Speaking about his dog Moose, he said, "I look at my dog - this sounds so absurd, but it's not - I don't know that I could love anything more."

He continued, "Like, I have a kid - oh, uh, maybe -and will be like, 'Eh, you know.' But the dog!"

However, that was still not enough to alert the media that the couple had a recent addition to their family.

In a profile by The New Yorker, it was revealed that an Instagram post by Tucker's sister, featuring the back of Driver's son's head, led fans to piece together the evidence that Driver had a son.

Driver called the efforts to hide his son's existence "a military operation."

He said, "My job is to be a spy - to be in public and live life and have experience. But, when you feel like you’re the focus, it’s really hard to do that."

Since then, Driver has shared a couple of details about his family life.

In his most recent Saturday Night Live monologue, he stated, "Some facts about me; I’m a husband and a father."

After the audience responded enthusiastically, he continued, "Thank you. It’s in that order though. I’ve been very clear with my son about that, he’s second in everything."

Driver will next star in the musical Annette, opposite Marion Cotillard. The film will explore the relationship between Driver's character, a stand-up comic, and Cotillard's character, an opera singer.
