Katy Perry made the exciting announcement last week that she and Orlando Bloom are expecting their first child together this summer. Following that bombshell, the pop star appeared on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and opened up about her and Bloom’s relationship.
“I’ve consciously or unconsciously picked a partner that makes sure to keep me evolving into the best version of myself,” Perry told Seacrest. “There’s a lot of friction between my partner and I, but that friction breeds something beautiful. It can breed a lot of light, you know?
“It’s just one of those relationships,” she added. “I don’t know about anyone else who’s listening what kind of relationships they’ve had — and I’ve had many — but it’s like we basically, we get down to the mat and come back up every time.”
Perry made the announcement by showing off her baby bump at the end of the music video for her new single, “Never Worn White.“
“OMG so glad I don’t have to suck it in anymore,” Perry tweeted after the video was released. “Or carry around a big purse lol,” she added.
“There’s a lot that will be happening this summer. Not only will I be giving birth literally, but also figuratively to something you guys have been waiting for. So let’s just call it a double whammy,” she said on Instagram, hinting at a summer release for the full album.
“I am excited,” Perry continued. “We’re excited and happy. It’s probably the longest secret I’ve ever had to keep. I like to tell you guys everything, but I knew I would tell you in the best way, which was through a piece of music because that’s how I speak to you. That’s how we speak together with each other.”
This will be Bloom and Perry’s first child together, although he has a nine-year-old son Flynn with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr.
Perry held a Q&A with fans on Instagram Live after the video was released and said she’s “been eating the same burrito for weeks on end” and “literally never cared for spice and now I have to carry Tabasco sauce in my purse.
“Foods that gross me out now are beef,” she added. “I’m not really into red meat. Thank God for the Impossible Burger.”
Earlier this month, fellow “American Idol” judge Luke Bryan told PEOPLE that Perry will be a great mom.
“She’s going to be a blast to have as a mom,” he said. “I couldn’t imagine growing up in her household. Even when I talk about me and my kids, she’s checking out how I juggle the kids. We’ll see one day if it ever happens how she’ll respond, but I know she’s going to be an amazing mom.”
