How Meryl Streep Met Husband Don Gummer

Meryl Streep has been married to Don Gummer for forty years.

Meryl said this about Don during her 2012 Academy Awards speech, 'First, I'm going to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you've given me.'

In 1978, the two met in unique circumstances. a 29-year-old Meryl had just lost her boyfriend John Cazale to lung cancer.

Meryl was kicked out of the apartment she shared with John. As a result of this situation, her brother, Harry, arrived with his friend, Don. So, Meryl met her husband through her brother while she was mourning the death of her boyfriend. This is quite unique. Well, these days anyway. In 2020, people do still meet through friends and family introducing them. The difference is that now, we have social media and things like Facetime. Many people meet and keep in contact that way, too.

It is refreshing to learn about Meryl meeting her husband in what seems like such a predestined way.

Meryl and Don did not date very long before they chose to get married. They got married around six months after they met. The wedding took place in the 'garden of her parent's home' in 'September of 1978.'

Don is an artist, specifically a sculptor. He is very accomplished in his work and has done 22 solo art shows, as well as 12 group shows.

Meryl and Don also have four kids: 'Henry Wolfe, 39, Mamie, 35, Grace, 33, and Louisa, 27.' Mamie and Grace are actresses, Henry is a musician, and Louisa is a model.

Don is very supportive of Meryl's acting career, and he has never used her fame to forge his own success. While Don lives a quiet life, he does accompany Meryl to many events. He attended the 1979 Academy Awards. In 1979 he also attended the 'Kramer vs. Kramer' premiere.

In 1983 and in 1989, the couple attended the Academy Awards again. They were also seen together at 'The Bridges of Madison County' premiere in 1995. In 2002, Don was with Meryl at 'The Hours' premiere. The pair also attended the 79th Academy Awards in 2007. They were also spotted at the 'Mamma Mia!' premiere in 2008. Most recently, in 2018, they were arm in arm at the 90th Academy Awards.

So, Meryl was enduring a time of loss when she first met her husband of forty years. This goes to show that sometimes, we can never expect what may happen.
