'Star Wars' Star Diego Luna Reveals He's Done Playing Cassian Andor

Star Wars actor Diego Luna believes that he will be done playing the role of Cassian Andor in a galaxy far, far away after the Disney+ live-action series "Andor" wraps up its second season.

Luna first originated the role in 2016's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," which explained how the Rebellion got the plans that allowed them to blow up the Death Star in 1977's "A New Hope," which was the first Star Wars movie ever made.

Although "Rogue One" introduced a lot of fan-favorite characters, many of them perished on Scarif, which made it next to impossible to continue their stories. Fortunately, Lucasfilm decided to give one Rebellion leader, Cassian Andor, his own two-season prequel series to help flesh out his character. Taking place over the course of 24 episodes, fans will get to see what Cassian Andor was like in the five years leading up to "Rogue One."

Although the series, helmed by "The Bourne Legacy" creator Tony Gilroy, has received widespread praise from fans and critics alike, Luna recently revealed that he is done playing Cassian Andor after "Andor" wraps up its second season.

In an interview on Entertainment Weekly's Star Wars podcast, Dagobah Dispatch, Diego Luna revealed that he and the "Rogue One" cast had made jokes about returning to the franchise after the movie was released six years ago.

"I would be lying if I tell you that I never thought of it," Luna said. "Obviously I did think of it, and we made so many jokes on set on what the possibilities were of coming back. And obviously one was going on a prequel, but I never thought of it as a real chance."

Luna said he "didn't find it healthy" to dwell too much on the possibility of his character getting a prequel series, adding, "I don't like this thing these days that these new formats are bringing, where people are always expecting more. You go into a show, and you get hired to do something, and you are always thinking, 'Oh, I hope there's a second season,' or, 'I hope there's part two.'"

For the 42-year-old Mexican actor, Luna talked about the importance of living in the moment and focusing on executive the role that he was given without concerning too much about the potential of playing the character again in the future.

"To me, I learned in my life that it's about living the present. It's about enjoying what you're doing. And for the sake of my mental health and clarity, I would say things need to have a beginning and an end for me to understand them and enjoy them and enjoy the ride," Luna said. "Until today I can tell you, I haven't gone into a project with that ambition of hoping it would last longer or it will go to somewhere else than what I have in front of me."

It was that mentality of living in the present that helped Diego Luna enjoy working on "Rogue One," considering that the cast knew that their characters would not survive their battle against the Empire.

"For me, it was pretty clear that Rogue One was a film that I had to enjoy from beginning to end. That at the end, I would be promoting it and then going back to my life and doing my stuff. And that was it," Luna said. "And it's interesting, because then I got offered Andor, but with the same premise, because Andor has a clear ending, which is Rogue One. Once Tony Gilroy came up with the idea of going back five years, there is just five years to tell."

Although there is always the possibility of a prequel series to "Andor," Luna quickly shut down the idea that he would return for a prequel of a prequel. "No, impossible," he said. "It would have to be someone else, man. I'm not getting any younger, so it definitely would have to be someone else."

Although he doesn't plan on reprising his role in any future Star Wars projects, he still said that he had a "beautiful journey" with his character. "For me, this is it. It's a beautiful journey now that I have 24 episodes, 24 shorter films, to tell the story of where Cassian comes from and how he got to be the man we met in Rogue One," he said.

Focusing on the present has again allowed Diego Luna to make the most of his final role with the character and the show as a whole. "It does have a beginning and an end. Therefore, I can understand it and I can enjoy the ride and kind of picture the aim we have," he said.

"I think that's needed, otherwise you're always working to get somewhere else. I don't think that way. All those people and coaches that tell people, 'Oh, picture yourself in 10 years, where you want to be. Project that and work for that.' That's nonsense," he continued.

"Worry about what you're doing today. Do it the best way you can. Enjoy the ride. Make sure you give the most, and you give everything you have," he added. "And something cool will happen if you do that. And, if not, the journey was worth it. So it's about now, the moment."

New episodes of "Andor" will be released on Disney+ each Wednesday.
