According to the latest reports, Disney has let the dust settle and bosses are “lobbying” for Johnny Depp to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the sixth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean. Because of the messy and complicated legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, Depp had lost his role as Jack Sparrow and fans started a petition for Disney to give Jack Sparrow back to him. In the midst of asking for justice, the petition is almost at its 200,000 signature goal.
Pirates of the Caribbean is a fantasy film franchise that follows the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow. Johnny Depp had become a worldwide phenomenon over the years and playing Jack Sparrow was one of his ultimate best career moves. The film series started in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which received positive reviews from critics and grossed some $654 million worldwide. After the first film’s success, Walt Disney Pictures revealed that a film series was in the works.
The ongoing battle with Depp’s ex-wife, Amber Heard, seems as though it’s an endless tug-of-war of “who done it.” It all began when Heard filed for divorce from Depp on May 23, 2016, and obtained a temporary restraining order against him, stating in her court declaration that he had been “verbally and physically abusive” throughout their relationship. A settlement was reached and the divorce was finalized in January 2017 and Heard dismissed the restraining order. The former couple issued a joint statement saying that their “relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love.
In early 2019, Depp sued Heard for $50 million for defamation over an editorial page she wrote for The Washington Post in December of 2018. According to the post, she wrote “a premise that she was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her.” But according to Depp, she never mentioned the fact that she allegedly abused him. As part of the suit, Depp submitted documents claiming that Heard had in fact physically abused him during the marriage rather than the other way around, a claim which Heard denies. In early 2020, Depp released audio recordings of conversations between himself and Heard which he alleges corroborate some of the claims he had previously made in his lawsuit.
According to, We Got This Covered, the new revelations in Depp’s defamation lawsuit are helping this decision of Disney to bring Depp back into the spotlight as Jack Sparrow. Metro News claims that the site reads: “The recent turn of events in Depp’s legal battle and the overwhelming support from the public in his favor has some of the Mouse House executives now lobbying for his return behind the scenes.” This could mean that the petition worked and fans will get to view Depp on the screen once again as Captain Jack Sparrow!
