Luke Bryan Didn't Like How People Reacted To News That He Wasn't Invited To Katy Perry's Wedding

Katy Perry is set to marry her fiance Orlando Bloom at some point this year, and she revealed recently two people who won't be on the guest list. While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live with her fellow American Idol judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, she said they won't be invited to the event

While the comment seemed to be in good fun and not at all malicious, it caused a stir on social media with people who found it rude.

“I didn’t like the way it looked,” Bryan told PEOPLE when asked about the backlash. “Lionel and I are pretty confident in Katy, Katy loves us, so I was like, ‘People don’t need to be mean about Katy not inviting us to the wedding!’ People spun it a little bit. It wasn’t awkward; it felt hilarious for me.”

Bryan has been married for 13 years, so PEOPLE asked him what his advice to Perry and Bloom would be.

“You can give advice, but marriage is a living, breathing thing,” Bryan said. “My thing is — it might sound cliché — but just don’t go to bed mad at each other. Even if you do go to bed mad at each other, don’t let it snowball," he continued. "Me and Caroline get at each other as much as anybody, but we try not to let it drag out or bury our problems.”

Later, he talked about what a great mom he think Perry would be one day.

"I couldn't imagine growing up in her household. Even when I talk about me and my kids, she's checking out how I juggle the kids," Bryan told the outlet. "We'll see one day if it ever happens how she'll respond, but I know she's going to be an amazing mom. Her and Orlando, they have a fun relationship and I think that's very critical. Keep the relationship fun."

Bryan previously talked to PEOPLE about why he loves American Idol.

"You’re able to watch good TV that you can sit down and watch with your family," Bryan said in an interview with outlet. "You can cry, you can cheer these kids on. There’s some kids from backgrounds where you just … pull for them. It’s the microcosm of life, we get to see it walk in and you get to see what America’s all about. They get to stand in front of us and sing. And year three, I’m enjoying it now more than ever.
