Love is Blind is one of the most extreme love-based reality TV shows to ever exist. Couples get engaged based on talking to one another through a pod. They weren’t allowed to see each other prior to the engagement. The couples then had only 30 days to prepare a for a wedding and walk down the aisle. While six couples got engaged, only two of them said “I do.” The show’s creator Chris Coelen told Entertainment Weekly why he believes the other couples got cold feet.
Coelen explained that he empathizes with the contestants for the difficult choice they had to make.
“Of course that’s hard, but I think it also showed that people were really committed to the idea of seeing it all the way through,” he told the outlet. “Even if they felt like they weren’t someone who… I mean, these people all love each other, whether or not they felt like they wanted to ultimately go through and marry them. I feel like there’s no question. I think there’s a lot of honor paid to that.”
One of the couples that didn’t make it down the aisle was Jessica and Mark. Jessica ended turning Mark down and walking away.
“The story of Jessica and Mark is really fascinating as I think there was so many times where Jessica kept thinking, ‘This is going to be the moment where somebody judges us and tells us we shouldn’t do it. It’s going to be the moment where somebody goes, you can’t do it.’ And everybody’s like, ‘Hey, no, this is awesome. This is great!’ ” Coelen explained.
“And, for whatever reason, she just couldn’t stop thinking about whatever her issues were and, rightly or wrongly, she couldn’t do it. I think she, in particular, really just wanted to go all the way through with it,” Coelen added.
Another unsuccessful couple was Kelly and Kenny. While the couple seemed solid throughout the show, Kelly couldn’t go through with saying “I do.”
“Ah, Kelly and Kenny! God, the sister with Kelly…she just wants to shake her, Kelly, what are you doing?!” Coelen exclaimed.
“I think people create obstacles of their own making. But you know what, personally, I love how real that is. I think the fact that people get heartbroken on this show and the stakes are as high as they are, is a great thing because that means when you do make it, you make it: you’re totally done. I love the raw authenticity of that. To me, the best TV is when it’s authentically real and raw. We didn’t pull anything back. It was an extraordinary experience,” he shared.
