When he was still just a child himself, Anderson Cooper lost his own father, actor and writer Wyatt Cooper, after he passed away unexpectedly during open-heart surgery at age 50. Unfortunately, that was only the beginning of the loss that Cooper would experience in his family.

Three years ago, his mother, legendary heiress and fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt, passed away from stomach cancer at the age of 95.

Although he has tried to avoid dealing with the grief of his cherished family members for most of his life, Cooper said that he realized that he had to tackle his feelings head-on when he became a father.

"I don't want to pass along to my kids any of my own failures or limitations," he told the magazine. "I want to be the best parent I can be, and I realized that the way I dealt with loss was effective for the time that it occurred, but that stuff catches up with you. You have to face it at some point."
