John Oliver Reveals Where He Keeps His Emmys After Seventh Consecutive Win

It looks like John Oliver has another golden trophy to add to his shelf...that's hidden in the back of his closet.

After winning his seventh Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, the host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight" told reporters backstage that they won't actually be able to see any of his 17 Emmys if they enter his NYC abode.

Host John Oliver and a few members of his team walked on stage to accept their seventh consecutive award for Outstanding Variety Talk Series.

After thanking his staff and his wife, he extended a thank you to HBO as well. “We know how lucky we are to get to make the exact show that we want exactly the way that we want to make it whether that’s making a Korean subway drama or blackmailing Congress over data brokers or staging an elaborate cabbage wedding,” he said. “We know how lucky we are so thank you so much.”

He also joked about the red letters on his teleprompter saying, “Stop Now,” joking, “[The sign] is saying stop now in big letters and I don’t know whether that’s about this speech or in general but either way, it’s a fair point.”

As Deadline pointed out, HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” with John Oliver has won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series category every year since “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” wrapped up its lengthy run. In addition to winning Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, and Video Control For A Series, it also picked up the award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series at last week’s Creative Arts ceremony.

At the Emmys backstage, one reporter asked John Oliver (via Deadline) how many Emmys that he had. Although John Oliver won his seventh executive Emmy tonight for Best Variety Talk Series, he has 17 Emmy wins in all.

“Do I have? Personally? You say that like there’s a slight threat in your voice!” Oliver joked. “How many do you have? Because it’s too many!”

When he was asked if he would ever give up his win streak, Oliver got a bit more sincere when he admitted, “It’s not really up to me.” Instead, he praised his staff, saying, “I’m proud of my staff, they work really so hard, especially these last three years.”

“What’s emotional is that I still haven’t seen most of them,” he continued. “Last year we were still working remotely, so I think there’s a whole chunk of them in the audience that I haven’t seen in years.”

Deadline noted that Oliver was not asked where he kept his Emmys in his New York City home, but Oliver decided to tell the crowd of reporters anyway.

“I have two little children, right, this is not a criticism, it’s a beautiful design…I have them in a closet where they can’t get to them,” he revealed. “Because this to a child is a weapon or something that can be impaled on if they fall over.”

Although he has won many awards over the year, Oliver confessed, “You can’t see them if you’re in my house.”

On September 8, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96. During the post-opening credits on his latest episode of “Last Week Tonight,” which debuted on September 11, fans in the U.K. noticed that some of his social media tributes to the late monarch from cartoon character The Crazy Frog and Domino’s Pizza were snipped from the segment (via Deadline).

“Obviously, we have to start with the UK, which is clearly still reeling from the shocking death of a 96-year-old woman from natural causes. It is a big moment this week and for some reason, absolutely everyone felt they had to wade in on [it],” Oliver said during the show.

A few minutes later, Oliver took aim at U.K.’s new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, and her praise of for-profit companies, saying, “The nicest thing the Queen of England ever did for anyone was die the week that woman became Prime Minister. Because for at least a week, she’s not going to be getting justifiably destroyed for answers like that.”

Although neither comment is particularly offensive, broadcasts in the U.K. have been sensitive to the way the Queen is portrayed and chose not to air the comments.
