While relatives of victims, firefighters, police officers, and city leaders gathered at various locations, including the National September 11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan, to hear the names of those who died there read aloud, Heather did her bit by sharing a touching Instagram Story.

The Story included a tear-jerking transcribed voicemail that a victim, Brian, left for his partner, Jules, while terrorists took over the plane he was on. Brian said, "I just want you to know I absolutely love you I want you to do good, go have good times, same to my parents and everybody, and I just totally love you, and I'll see you when you get there. Bye babe."

Along with the heartbreaking words was Heather's caption that read, "This breaks my heart every time l read it. Holding the ones I love extra close tonight and thinking about the ones we lost on this day. Will never forget," accompanied by three red heart emojis.

While it is hard for us to know how her three million followers reacted to the Story, the remembrance ceremonies held that day were enough evidence that everybody was still nursing painful heartbreaks, sadness, and loss. According to Marca, thousands of United States citizens gathered at all three places where hijacked planes crashed on September 11, 2001 — the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, New York, and a Pennsylvania field.

Victims' relatives and loved ones were joined by President Joe Biden at the Pentagon, Vice President Kamala Harris in New York, and first lady Jill Biden in Shanksville. The multitude that gathered at the Pentagon seemed undeterred by the rain as Biden walked to a wreath of flowers, placed his hand over his heart, and somberly said:

"I know for all those of you who lost someone, 21 years is both a lifetime and no time at all. The American story itself changed that day. What we cannot change, never will, is the character of this nation the attackers sought to wound. The character of sacrifice and love, of generosity and grace, of strength and resilience."

You would recall that the attacks killed almost 3,000 people after Al-Qaeda hijacked a total of four planes that crashed into different locations. The events from that day spurred a U.S. "war on terror," and it continues to affect American politics and public life.
