Harrison Ford Hangs Up His Whip After 'Indiana Jones 5': 'This Is It'

Actor Harrison Ford is ready to hang up his whip. The “Star Wars” veteran, known for playing the smuggler Han Solo in a galaxy far, far away, is equally as well-known and beloved for his role as archaeologist Indiana Jones.

Starting with “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981, he reprised his role again in 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” He teamed up with Sean Connery in 1989’s “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” before dividing audiences with 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

After decades of playing the iconic character, Ford, who turned 80 last July, is ready to finally hang up his hat for good after the long-delayed "Indiana Jones 5" hits theaters on June 30, 2023.

Over the weekend, Disney fans got a first look at the upcoming projects at the D23 Expo, which runs through Sunday at the Anaheim Convention Center. Along with director James Mangold, Harrison Ford, costar Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy all appeared on stage to reveal a first look at "Indiana Jones 5."

The first footage of the trailer was shown to live audiences at the convention center but has not been made available online at the time of this writing.

Ford appeared extremely emotional on stage as he praised the latest film in the franchise. His comments, which were transcribed by Deadline, also marked the end of his long-running career as the whip-slinging archaeologist.

“I’m very proud to say that this one is fantastic, and this is one of the reasons,” he said as he pointed to Waller-Bridge, who is rumored to take over the franchise after Ford retires. The "Fleabag" creator, 37, said that she had "the time of [her] life" making the film.

“Indiana Jones movies are about mystery and adventure, but they’re also about heart, and I’m really, really happy that we have a really human story to tell, as well as a movie that will kick your a--,” he continued.

The "What Lies Beneath" actor made it clear that this will be his last film in the franchise, saying, "This is it," before joking, "I will not fall down for you again."

Mangold also spoke at the D23 Expo, speaking to his experience working with what he called "a Mount Rushmore of creative greats" in the final Indiana Jones film of Ford's career.

“I was surrounded by tremendous talent and support, and such goodwill and advice and found myself living out a kind of fantasy from when I was in high school, wondering what it would be like to direct one of these pictures, and to honor what they mean to you and me,” Mangold told the audience.

The "Girl, Interrupted" filmmaker confirmed that he is scoring the film alongside John Williams, who revealed in July that he might be getting ready to retire after turning 90 earlier this year.

Although the title of the new film has yet to be announced, fans are looking forward to an all-star cast consisting of "Hannibal" star Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, and Shaunette Renée Wilson.

In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter released back in April, Mads talked about what it was like working with Ford on set.

“It was the first time I met him and he’s an insanely powerful person. Not just an actor, but physically," he recalled. “I remember the first day we were shooting, it was a night shoot, then we stopped at 5 a.m. — and then he got on his mountain bike and went biking for 50 kilometers [31 miles]. Harrison is a monster of a man, a very nice monster.”

Mads also praised the final film, saying that it reminded him very strongly of "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

“It just oozed that golden period of serials from the 1940s — and that’s in the fifth film as well,” he explained. “They’re going heavily back to the first and second film and getting that original feel, the original Indy, something dense and epic.”

Fans can catch Harrison Ford in his final appearance as "Indiana Jones 5" when it hits theaters on June 30, 2023.
