Gabrielle Union in these last few months has been put through the wringer. From issues over alleged discrimination at America’s Got Talent as a judge, and sharing with the world her now transgender daughters journey, people are not too fond of certain moves Union has made. Many have cited sexism and racism as the main reasoning for why people have sent so much “hate” her way. When it comes to her being so blunt and outspoken about a plethora of issues people believe she has brought some of this controversy upon herself.
When Terry Crews went out on a limb and basically invalidated all of Gabrielle Union’s criticisms of America’s Got Talent, people came for him with a ferocity. The idea that he wouldn’t defend her or atleast see where she was at and try to understand her frustrations left a bad taste in fans’ mouths. When all that drama was initially going on Terry released a statement proclaiming he doesn’t live to please anyone but his wife which was taken as a dig at Gabrielle.
Through all of this judgement Gabrielle did receive a lot of support from fellow famous creatives, like a tweet from Ariana Grande citing how she is behind Union. After hearing what Union was allegedly facing as a judge on “X-Factor” like comments about her hair being “too black”, and the constant feeling of being a replaceable asset instead of a respected piece of the puzzle, made people look twice at Simon Cowell. Although the issue has quieted down there does seem to be a looming possibility of legal repercussions.
As for her parenting style people were up in arms over the recent revelation that her stepson, now stepdaughter is transgender. Her and NBA star husband Dwayne Wade have been a united front over promoting acceptance through their children. The criticism on one side of the shelf is that at 12 how does any child know through and through what they want, and who they are. Making such profound decisions concerning one’s identity can be shaky ground to cover. On the other spectrum there are those who think it is wonderful the love, and esteem they’ve instilled in Zaya.
Whatever uncalled for shade that gets thrown Gabrielles way doesn’t seem to drag her down. With each terrible moment she builds a stronger front of power, and grace. Her relationship with Dwayne Wade in itself was a tad messy through it’s seasons, but with time people grew to admire them for weathering the storm. Their highlighted struggles concerning Gabrielle’s infertility dove deep into what it means to be a woman, and how difficult it can be to keep it all together when everything looks to be falling apart. Her passionate nature is at the end of the day what makes her so sought after.
