Jennifer Lawrence Almost Had An Abortion
During her Vogue cover interview, Lawrence revealed that she once got pregnant in her 20s and was determined to have an abortion. The "Hunger Games" actress said she "one hundred percent intended" to have the procedure when she unexpectedly had a miscarriage.
Many years later, during filming for "Don't Look Up," Lawrence got pregnant again and had another miscarriage. When she miscarried that pregnancy, she had to undergo a dilation and curettage (D&C), a surgical operation to clear out all the tissues from her uterus.
As someone who has experienced the reality of wanting an abortion and making that choice for herself, Lawrence has spoken out severally about women's rights and the freedom for women to have safe abortions. She also reflected on this and other issues during the interview.
She Reflected On Abortion And Gun Control
Lawrence also spoke to Vogue about her thoughts on the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The Academy Award winner said, "I remember a million times thinking about it while I was pregnant. Thinking about the things that were happening to my body. And I had a great pregnancy… But every single second of my life was different. And it would occur to me sometimes: What if I was forced to do this?"
Lawrence also spoke on gun control and legislation in America, saying she doesn't understand parents who don't push for stricter gun control and laws. She said, "I'm raising a little boy who is going to go to school one day. Guns are the number-one cause of death for children in the United States. And people are still voting for politicians who receive money from the NRA. It blows my mind."
The "Red Sparrow" actress continued, "I mean if Sandy Hook didn't change anything? We as a nation just went, Okay! We are allowing our children to lay down their lives for our right to a second amendment that was written over 200 years ago."
Jennifer Lawrence Can't Discuss Politics With Her Family
Lawrence was born in Kentucky to a very politically conservative family. During the interview, she admitted that it's very difficult for her to talk about politics and political issues with her family. The "Silver Linings Playbook" star revealed that she has previously "unleashed text messages" but never received a reply.
She said that after doing this, she'd "feel bad and send a picture of the baby." However, the actress maintains that she "can't f--k with people who aren't political anymore. She said, "You live in the United States of America. You have to be political. It's too dire. Politics are killing people."
She Spoke Against The Overturning Of Roe V. Wade
Lawrence has always made her stance on abortion and women's rights very clear. In October 2021, she and her friend, Amy Schumer, took part in Washington D.C's Rally for Abortion Justice. Lawrence held a sign that read, "Women can't be free if they don't control their bodies," while Schumer's sign read, "Abortion is essential."
Concerning the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Lawrence told Vogue, "Like Ruth Bader Ginsberg said, a woman of means is always going to be able to get an abortion. If anybody ever needed proof that our two-party system is a failure. Get the government out of my snatch. Okay? Pull quote! On the record."
The "Winter's Bone" actress continued, "It's too personal to a female's existence to watch white men debate over uteruses when they from the bottom of their hearts can't find a clitoris."
