A well-known Hollywood marriage and family therapist, who was once engaged to Drew Carey, was murdered at her home in the Hollywood Hills after officials say she fell from a third-story balcony. 38-year-old Dr. Amie Harwick died at an L.A. hospital Saturday, hours after an early morning attack, according to the LAPD.
Officers said they first responded to the Hollywood Hills home after reports of a woman screaming, and upon arriving encountered a man in the street who told them his roommate was being attacked inside her home.
The roommate told cops he had jumped a wall and ran to homes in the neighborhood in search of help, according to KTLA 5.
When Harwick was discovered by responding officers, she was seriously injured from what appeared to be a fall from her balcony.
"When officers went to make entry, they found the victim on the ground beneath a third story balcony. The victim was gravely injured. She suffered significant injuries consistent with a fall," the LAPD said.
Harwick was transported to a nearby hospital and unfortunately died due to her injuries.
Officers quickly determined a crime had taken place after discovering evidence of forced entry and a struggle.
“The investigation revealed possible evidence of a struggle in the upstairs as well as forced entry to the residence,” LAPD said.
They added, “A canvass of the area located further evidence of an intruder entering the property and leaving after the murder."
To make matters even more tragic, Harwick had allegedly expressed fear over a recent ex-boyfriend and had even obtained a restraining order against the man, but unfortunately it had expired. Officials suspected the man was responsible for the murder and assembled a task force that picked him up on Saturday afternoon.
41-year-old Gareth Pursehouse was arrested in connection with her death.
Harwick allegedly last made contact with Pursehouse two weeks ago. As of Sunday evening, he was still in custody with bail set at $2 million.
Dr. Aime Harwick was famously a model before starting her successful therapy practice. She began dating "Price Is Right" host Drew Carey, who recently appeared on "The Masked Singer," in 2017 and the two reportedly got engaged before splitting at the end of 2018.
