Actress Sydney Sweeney recently reacted to intense backlash from several pictures she posted of her mom's birthday surprise party. Many fans on Twitter and TikTok lashed out at Sweeney because one of the photos showed her and her family beside a man wearing a shirt with a "Blue Lives Matter" flag.
Several guests at the surprise party wore MAGA-inspired hats but instead of meaning the controversial "Make America Great Again," they read, "Make Sixty Great Again." Sweeney didn't post photos, including the hats, but her brother, Trent Sweeney, posted them on his Instagram.
The "Euphoria" actress has spoken severally about her mother and family and how they supported her dreams and made many sacrifices to further her film career. In July, she posted an emotional video of crying to her mom on the phone after being nominated for an Emmy Award. Read on to find out more.
Sydney Sweeney Reacted To The Backlash
Sweeney and her family recently celebrated her mom, Lisa Mudd Sweeney's 60th birthday with a surprise party. The actress then posted several photos from the celebration on her Instagram and captioned them, "No better way to celebrate my momma than a surprise hoedown🤠."
One of the photos showed an unidentified man standing beside Sweeney and her family and wearing a blue lives matter flag T-shirt. The blue lives matter tag arose as a pro-police response to the Black Lives Matter movement and had a negative view on social media, especially amongst the young generation.

Many fans took to their social media to speculate on the politics of Sweeney and her family and debate if they truly support the blue lives matter position. Sweeney responded via a tweet, "You guys this is wild. An innocent celebration for my mom's milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone ♥️ and Happy Birthday Mom!"
Sydney Sweeney's Brother Posted Photos With 'MAGA' Lookalike Hats
Sweeney also shared more photos from the birthday party on her Instagram story, which revealed that they had line dancing, games, embroidered denim outfits, and a rodeo-themed birthday cake. However, the "White Lotus" actress didn't include photos of guests wearing red MAGA-inspired hats, which rubbed many fans wrong.

Fans found the pictures of the hats on Sweeney's younger brother Trent's Instagram and spread them on social media. They also speculated that Sweeney deliberately didn't post the photos with the parody pieces because she knew there would be intense backlash.
However, the hats weren't actually in support of former U.S. President Donald Trump; they were similar because they used the same design. The hats read "Make Sixty Great Again" as a reference to Lisa's birthday.
Fans Criticized Sydney Sweeney And Her Family
After the controversial photos spread on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, many fans criticized Sweeney and her family and speculated that the actress was secretly a Donald Trump supporter. One person tweeted, "WHERE WAS SYDNEY SWEENEY'S FAMILY MEMBERS ON THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 6TH 2021," referring to the U.S. capitol attack by Trump supporters.

The actress quickly trended on Twitter, with many fans divided between supporting and criticizing her. Some argued that the photos don't mean anything and that Sweeney can't dictate what people wear to her mom's party. Some agreed that the photos were damning but argued that Sweeney's family's politics don't reflect her personal views.
One tweet read, "Has the thought crossed anyone's mind that it's possible Sydney Sweeney strongly disagrees with the politics of her parents, just like an enormous proportion of Millennials/Gen Z?"
Sydney Sweeney's Family Is Very Supportive
Sweeney has spoken severally about how much her family supports her and how much she loves them. In July, Sweeney posted a video of her tearing up while on the phone with her mom after being nominated for an Emmy. During a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, the actress spoke about how much they sacrificed for her film career.
She said, "I would never have been able to pursue my dreams without her supporting that decision. I was 12, 13 years old and my mom and dad gave up everything that they knew for me to be able to pursue my dreams. We lost friends, we lost our house, we lost everything in pursuit of it."
