Given the way the marriage between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston ended, it would make sense if Aniston and Pitt never spoke again. For a while, that was precisely what happened, and the pair seemed to be on relatively bad terms.

In recent years, though, things seem to have swung the other way. Thanks in part to an apology from Pitt related to the many mistakes he made during their marriage, the couple are on better terms than they've been in years.

Pitt and Aniston's marriage lasted for five years, from 2000 to 2005, and they dated for a couple of years prior to the marriage. From the outside, the relationship seemed like one of the most stable in Hollywood, which only increased the shock factor when things started to go down hill.

By 2005, the marriage was over, and Pitt was embroiled in rumors that he'd cheated on Aniston with future wife Angelina Jolie on the set of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."

Both Jolie and Aniston deny that these rumors are true, but they certainly had an impact on how the public perceived the end of Pitt and Aniston's marriage.

At the time, Aniston said: “It’s just complicated, relationships are complicated… There are all these levels of growth – and when you stop growing together, that’s when the problems happen.”

Aniston also said that their divorce came about not because of infidelity, but because they both wanted to be happy and they weren't with each other.

In more recent years, though, Pitt and Aniston have regained some of the closeness they had during their marriage. That started in 2016, when Pitt reached out to Aniston after her mother died. It was the kind of touching gesture that helped Pitt return to Aniston's good graces more than a decade after their marriage fell apart.

Following a recent interaction backstage at the SAG Awards, it's safe to say that fans are thrilled by the possibility that the two could become close again.

According to an insider who spoke with Entertainment Tonight, Brad's willingness to apologize for his past behavior played a huge role in their reconciliation. “Brad is completely sober now and is in such a different place than he was when they were together,” the source said. “He has apologized to her for many things he felt were his issues in their relationship. He truly takes ownership for his mistakes and that has changed their relationship with each other today. They both have moved on.”
