Singer Demi Lovato just disclosed that she had “survivor’s guilt” after Mac Miller passed in 2018. A few months before the rapper died of an overdose, the Disney alum went through a similar experience but pulled through.
In a docuseries released years later, Lovato explained what exactly happened to her due to the overdose. The 30-year-old revealed that she had three strokes and a heart attack, as well as some brain damage, and her vision became so impaired she was deemed unfit to drive.
Lovato recently appeared in a podcast and talked about her struggle with substance abuse, revealing that after Miller’s death, she felt a lot of guilt, which put things in perspective for her. Miller was found dead in his home a few months after splitting up with his ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande.
Demi Lovato Said She Had ‘Survivor’s Guilt’
Lovato recently got candid about her more painful thoughts concerning her journey with drugs. The 30-year-old talked about the remorse and survivor’s guilt she felt after popular rapper Miller died of a drug overdose on September 7, 2018.
The rapper’s death occurred mere months after Lovato’s almost fatal drug overdose, and she revealed that hearing about Miller’s death gave her a clearer view of her situation. She appeared in a recent episode of the “Zane Lowe Show” podcast and said, “I had a lot of survivor’s guilt after my overdose because right after that, Mac Miller died.”
The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer continued, “It just put everything into perspective for me of, ‘That could have been you, that almost was you, and how are you going to live your life now? ‘And it affected me a lot.”
Demi Lovato Wrote A Song About Mac Miller
Lovato released “Dead Friends” as a track on her recent “Holy Fvck” album. While writing the song, the “Cool For The Summer” artist was reportedly inspired by the passing of a number of her friends as well as Miller’s untimely death.
The actress explained, “I’ve lost friends that were around my age, and those hurt so deeply because we’ve been in the trenches together.” The album has sixteen tracks and was released on August 19 via Island Records.
Lovato revealed that “Holy Fvck” symbolized a sort of rebirth for her and talked about what she went through in the past. In July 2018, the Disney alum got hospitalized after an almost fatal heroin overdose.
Demi Lovato Overdosed In 2018
After her infamous brush with death in 2018, Lovato came clean about what happened during the period in her YouTube docuseries “Dancing With The Devil.” The series was released last year and revealed that the actress had suffered three strokes and a heart attack due to the incident.
During the documentary, she said, “For the past couple years, I’ve heard a lot of stories about my life and what people think has happened, and I wanted to set the record straight. If it can help you, I hope that it can. That was ultimately my purpose to putting this out: to help people on this path.”
Lovato further revealed that she “snapped” due to the mounting pressure of her fame and career in Hollywood that year after topping the charts with her two singles and being nominated for a Grammy. The 30-year-old added, “I’ve had a lot of lives, like my cat, you know? I’m on my ninth life.”
The singer also revealed that the OD damaged her brain, and she had to stop driving because of her visual blind spots. Lovato also suffered intense eye damage and had to learn how to read anew.
Mac Miller Died In 2018
Unlike Lovato, who was able to come out of her terrifying brush with death after overdosing, Miller was unable to make it and passed away at the age of 28. The rapper was previously open about his problems with substance abuse and was found dead by a friend in his California home.
He talked about his issues after splitting with Ariana Grande earlier in 2018. Miller was also arrested in May after a San Fernando Valley car crash. He had almost twice the alcohol limit in his system and was charged with two counts of driving while drunk twice after.
After his death was revealed to the public, Miller’s family took to social media to release a statement. The statement read, “Malcolm McCormick known and adored by fans as Mac Miller, has tragically passed away at the age of 26. He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends, and fans. Thank you for your prayers.”
