As the clock winded down to zero, there was a new Super Bowl champion: the Kansas City Chiefs. In a miraculous comeback victory orchestrated by NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs were able to claim their first Super Bowl title in over fifty years. It was a true testament to the quarterback who has been lights out all year long, aside from some minor slumps. Mahomes is without a doubt one of the biggest stars in the NFL and will continue to be so for many years to come. This doesn't mean that he didn't have his doubters, though.

Another great quarterback by the name of Troy Aikman has had his own fair share of success when he played for the Dallas Cowboys, even with Super Bowl titles to boot. However, since he became an analyst and commentator, Aikman has given his criticisms to new quarterbacks that have come into the league. One particular player is Mahomes, the reigning Super Bowl champion and game MVP. Following the win by the Chiefs, a tweet from Aikman in 2017 went viral for its anti-Patrick Mahomes sentiment. After being retweeted over 200,000 times since last night, Aikman will be having to eat his words for at least the near future.

In 2017, a publication known as The Athletic put out a story documenting comparisons between Mahomes and Aikman, albeit, on the part of Chiefs' quarterback, there was not much to go on at that point. The comparisons were on the perceived ability of Mahomes, not his accomplishments. Still, Aikman wasn't thrilled with the story and tweeted out, "Talk to me when he has 33% of my Super Bowl Titles." Unfortunately, for Aikman, The Athletic wasn't going to let him live this one down, at least in the immediate future.

The Athletic Kansas City Twitter account tweeted in September of this past year that even before the season had really gotten underway, Mahomes was already well on his way to becoming a better quarterback than Aikman was. "Patrick Mahomes has thrown 36% of Troy Aikman's career touchdowns, in about 8% of the games," they wrote. The numbers are surely even more skewed at this point, given the success Mahomes had during the regular season, as well as, his team's playoff run to the Super Bowl victory.

But, while Aikman was initially critical of Mahomes as a new and young quarterback in the NFL, he has since offered praise for the signal-caller. "I’ve seen Pat’s games. The guy’s been phenomenal. Great kid, love everything about him. But I don’t even look at the numbers anymore and say, ‘oh yeah, this guy’s playing great.’ I just don’t because the numbers are so incomprehensible. ... If you watch the film and you’re able to actually study these guys, you’d come away saying, ‘Wow, this guy’s really playing great," Aikman has recently said.

He's not willing to allow the numbers to do all the talking, though. To him, the stats don't tell the whole story and extrapolate to a quarterback's overall success. "I just don’t like it when we start trying to look at numbers and say, ‘this is why this guy’s greater than this particular player or this former player or whatever it is.’ It just doesn’t make any sense."

Mahomes has a bright future ahead of him with the potential to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. He's already on his way, that's for sure.
