The 33-year-old, at the time, reacted to Smith slapping Chris Rock onstage with a since-deleted picture that she captioned, “and here is a picture of my dress at the party after the award show where we are apparently screaming profanities and assaulting people on stage now.” Kravitz has now said that she has “complicated” feelings about how she reacted to the drama that shook the internet in March.
Zoë Kravitz Deems Times Too Scary To Share Honest Opinions Online
Although it has been months since celebrities had to choose a side after the Smith and Rock fiasco at the Oscars, one person who wishes she had handled the aftermath better is Kravitz. In an interview with Wall Street Journal, the “High Fidelity” actress addressed the backlash she suffered after she shared the image and caption mentioned above.
The “Big Little Lies” star said that she was “torn about what to say” since she was not “supposed to just talk about it; I have very complicated feelings around it. I wish I had handled that differently. And that’s okay.” After claiming that it was a “scary time” to have a contrary opinion or “make controversial art or statements,” Kravitz added:
“It’s mostly scary because art is about conversation. That should, in my opinion, always be the point. The internet is the opposite of conversation. The internet is people putting things out and not taking anything in.”
Most of the social media backlash she received came from people who had seen her mess up over the years. In fact, her posting the picture of the pink strapless gown she rocked to the Oscars and the white dress she wore to the Vanity Fair after-party reminded observers of her problematic friendship with designer Alexander Wang.
The Blast shared that Wang became the subject of many publications after some sweatshop workers sued him in 2012. The lawsuit alleged that workers had passed out after being forced to work days at a time without getting adequate compensation or breaks. The lawsuit was, however, dropped after Wang settled out of court for undisclosed terms.
Later in 2020, the modeling industry watchdog account S— Model Management and the fashion industry whistleblower account DietPrada started publishing Instagram posts containing lists of people who claimed that Wang had sexually assaulted them.
Although reps for the 2009 Swiss Textiles Award winner published a statement on December 31, 2020, saying that they intended to find out the source of these “claims,” more allegations against Wang surfaced the next day. Kravitz has remained by the 38-year-old’s side despite these allegations — a fact that seemed to irk those that saw her post against Smith.
The “Mad Max: Fury Road” Made An Impression on “SNL” Fans Despite Some Good-Natured Interruptions
Just before the Oscars drama unfolded, Kravitz had a chance to host “Saturday Night Live” in March. The Blast noted that her opening monologue centered around her latest film, “The Batman,” which features “Twilight” alum Robert Pattinson handling the lead role while Kravitz plays Catwoman. The actress began her monologue, joking:
“In the movie, I play Catwoman — sorry, the Catwoman. To prepare for the role, I watched the movie musical Cats every day for a year, which is actually the same way I heard Joaquin Phoenix prepared to play the Joker.”
Kravitz was, however, interrupted when “SNL” star Kate McKinnon approached the stage in a leather suit with pointy cat ears, asking: “Somebody out here talking about cats?” Kravitz responded, “Hi, I was just doing my monologue. You’re also Catwoman?”
Thus ensued a back and forth that included a cat signal and two other Catwoman appearances by Ego Nwodim and an older woman pushing a grocery cart with a white cat inside. The old woman turned out to be Aidy Bryant, who introduced herself as a “cat lady” and the cat as her husband.
The performance seemed to thrill fans who gushed about it online, with one writing, “Her level of maturity and personality is in [SIC] another level. She’s amazing. Love her! So glad she was invited to SNL.” Another “SNL” viewer revealed that they watched “the Batman twice last weekend and Zoe Kravitz portrayal of Catwoman was straight up awesome!”
