Tom Holland Explains Why Social Media Isn't For Him: 'Overstimulating' & 'Overwhleming'

Tom Holland is prioritizing his mental health and taking steps in favor of it!

The "Spider-Man" actor, who has previously deleted his Instagram account, confirmed to fans that he would officially retire from social media for a crucial reason. His decision comes nearly nine months after taking a temporary break from acting. 

Although Holland has not appeared in any recent projects, he remains in the headlines. The actor is back in the news after he announced his leave of absence from social media in a video he posted on Instagram.  The 26-year-old's reason for the social media break is due to his mental health and Stem4 — an app run by his charitable organization called The Brothers Trust. The app is designed to help teenagers deal better with their mental health.

After admitting that it took him a while to shoot the three-minute clip, Holland said that he found Twitter and Instagram "quite overwhelming and stimulating." The English actor said he usually got caught up - and even spiraled - when he read about himself online. Since this cycle was "very detrimental" to his mental state, he decided to "take a step back and delete the app."

Holland also used some parts of his lengthy caption to speak to his fans about Stem4. After noting that he wanted to highlight what his organization was doing, he asked fans to "take the time" to watch the footage and share it with people it resonated with.

The clip, which has been viewed over 17 million times with nearly 7 million likes, prompted fans to show their support under the post. One wrote, "I think we all need a break from insta sometimes. See ya, Tom," while another stated, "I totally understand about how social media affects mental health.Take care of you."

Many fans appreciated Holland for highlighting mental health, and celebrities like Justin Bieber expressed their love for the British Academy Film Award winner. While fans support Holland's decision - months after he disclosed his plans to quit acting to focus on "family," others wonder how he will gush over his girlfriend and actress, Zendaya, in the future.

Fans would recall that the "Euphoria" actress celebrated Holland when he turned 26 in June via Instagram. In The Blast's report, it was noted at the time that Zendaya shared a black-and-white snap of the couple with her 150 million followers. Her caption was short and sweet as she penned, "Happiest of birthdays to the one who makes me the happiest." The post garnered over 25 million likes and 221k comments from fans showering their love and well-wishes on the pair.

In April, The Blast reported that Zendaya opened up about the benefits of having Holland by her side as she navigates stardom. The 25-year-old actress, who allegedly started dating the actor during the filming of the "Spider-Man" series, said:

"I think it's great to have that support and love around you because you need that. This isn't an easy job, so it's good to have that to free you up from it every now and then."

Holland's supportiveness comes in handy whenever his girlfriend needs to detox from playing Rue — a high schooler dealing with staying clear of drugs after finishing her rehab term — on "Euphoria." The Guinness World Record holder has even hinted at his desire to join Zendaya on the set of the HBO Max show.

He acknowledged that even though he had been "petitioning for this for a long time," it had not happened yet, and he was "very disappointed." The three-time Saturn Awards winner added that he had been on set about 30 times during its second season. Zendaya confirmed her man's looming presence on set in a separate interview, commenting that he supported her "through the whole season." 

The Emmy Award winner also addressed her beau's possible appearance on the show claiming that they often joked about "sneaking him into the background and seeing if someone can spot him." The couple's supporters can barely wait for that to happen as they are anxious to see Holland step outside his comfort zone.
