Marvel director Taika Waititi recently came under fire for previous anti-trans comments. The 46-year-old caught the public’s attention after news of his secret wedding with Rita Ora spread. The duo were together for a year and have appeared together in several events.
Waititi was recently praised by some for his LGBTQ spin on the recently released “Thor: Love And Thunder.” The Marvel movie spotlighted a gay character, Korg, who the director voiced.
Despite his recent pro-LGBTQ actions, fans dug up comments by the director that displayed contrary sentiments. In tweets made almost ten years ago, Waititi trolled trans women, beauty pageant contestants, and even deadnamed Caitlyn Jenner.
Taika Waititi Made Anti-Trans Comments
Days after the internet found out about Waititi and Ora’s secret marriage, the Marvel director became the recipient of online backlash. After digging through his old tweets, followers discovered anti-trans comments and an instance when he deadnamed Caitlyn Jenner.
The tweets were made almost ten years ago, and the “Thor: Love and Thunder” director, who named himself a gay icon, had some unsavory comments for both trans women and people who contested in beauty pageants.
One of the tweets, dated January 16, 2013, criticized the makeup of trans women, calling it “manly.” He wrote, “No disrespect to men who want to be/dress as women. I should have just said their makeup looks manly. Also, no disrespect to meth users.”
Fans called Out Taika Waititi
This was crass. But, again, he’s saying actual trans women (“kathoey”) better looking than the contestants. pic.twitter.com/Kje7MUENEE

The director’s comment about meth users referred to beauty pageants contestants. Waititi criticized the contestants in an earlier post where he was called out not long after. The comment read, “Combining heels and bikini whilst plastering your face in orange, so you resemble a leather pudding is totes empowering.”
An ally responded to the director, claiming that his comments were “not cool.” To which Waititi replied, “No it is cool.”
The user wrote back, “‘No, Taika, it’s not cool. You need to apologise. My trans* friends who struggle with suicide daily due to similar comments hardly think so.”
Instead of the expected apology, the 46-year-old only doubled down on his stance and wrote, “My trans friends can walk in heels, but you’re right, actual kathoey are better looking.” The term Kathoey is a Thai word primarily used to refer to trans women.
He Was Allegedly Transphobic Towards Caitlyn Jenner
While some of the director’s fans tried to excuse his comments by pointing out just how long ago they were made, it wasn’t the only instance he was disrespectful to trans people. According to Daily Mail, Waititi deadnamed Jenner.
Deadnaming is when a trans or non-binary person is referred to by the name they used before transitioning. After the Hebdo terror attack in Paris, Waititi posted, “We’ll all be wearing #JeSuis[Caitlyn]Jenner badges by Monday.”
Waititi’s comments were revealed not long after the actor released “Thor: Love And Thunder” and “Our Flag Means Death.” His take on both movies gave him the image of an LGBT ally.
While talking about his movies earlier this year, he said, “We’re all queer. Just to varying degrees of where we are on the [sexuality] spectrum, I think. I think, innately, humans have all got some degree of queerness in them.” He also voiced Korg, a gay character in “Thor: Love And Thunder.”
Taika Waititi Married Rita Ora
E! News revealed Waititi and Ora recently tied the knot just a year after the duo sparked romance rumors. They first got the attention of fans in April 2021 after they posted themselves in a cozy position in the artist’s Instagram post.
The “Body On Me” singer posted a number of pictures and was seen with Waititi in a cozy setting in one. She captioned, “Good times, memories, random things on my phone. And the ones I love.” They went on to appear in the “RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under” world premiere together a week after the post.
Their official debut as a couple on the red carpet was during the Los Angeles “Suicide Squad 2” premiere. Waititi and Ora also attended the “Eternals” premiere in October. The two have not said much about their relationship besides the artist saying she was in “a great place in [her] life.”
