Although Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped away from the royal family in the hopes of living a quieter life, their announcement has spawned a wave of press attention that’s unlike anything the couple has seen before.
As a result of this renewed interest, Prince William and Prince Charles have been reaching out to the couple with offerings of love and support. According to reporting in Express, the couple is facing swarms of paparazzi every time either one of them appears in public.
The source in Express claims that William and Charles have told the couple that they are welcome to return to the UK, and won’t be obligated to perform any royal duties should they choose to return.
There are also preparations underway to get the couple back if things go bad quickly for the couple in North America. Harry and Meghan announced their plan to step back from the royal family earlier this month, and announced a plan to split their time between the UK and Canada as part of that arrangement.
Even as Meghan and Harry have taken steps to move away from the press access that comes with being a member of the royal family, press have continued to hound the couple in Canada.
Just last week, the couple issued a statement warning the media not to intrude in their private lives after cameras caught Meghan hiding behind a row of bushes while walking their pets. Now, those inside the palace are worried about the couple’s safety so far from the rest of the royal family.
Although the couple is not expected to return to the UK anytime soon, palace officials are apparently planning for the worst. “The palace is very worried about the Sussexes, because they are vulnerable outside the embrace of the family,” the source told Express. “They are making contingency plans in case the Sussexes suddenly turn round and say: ‘Can we come back under your wing?’”
The source was clear that there is no set timeline for these plans, and that they are meant for the future.
Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back from the royal family sent shockwaves through the UK. Although plenty of people agreed with their decision, there were others who felt that Markle had pushed Prince Harry in the wrong direction.
Of course, part of the reason they decided to make this change is because coverage of Meghan in the UK was already quite unfavorable, and even racist at times. There may have been no winning for the two of them, given their situation.
