Why Some Hated Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton's Grammy Performance

Every Grammys ceremony is a mixed bag. For every great performance, there's one that you decide to grab a snack during. This year, there were plenty of memorable performances from artists like Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Demi Lovato, and Lil Nas X.

One performance that was eagerly anticipated among their fans was Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton's duet of their new single, "Nobody But You." Unfortunately, even for fans, the performance failed to live up to all of the hype that had preceded it.

In fact, the couple's names were trending on Twitter shortly after the performance, and not because they'd hit it out of the park. One tweet eloquently stated: "Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton have the palpable on-stage chemistry of two parents who have nothing in common but their kids are best friends so they’re forced to constantly interact and it’s always slightly awkward."

There were also critiques of the couple's choice of outfits and of their overall skills as live performers.

Another fan had no deep love for the song, but defended Stefani nonetheless. "i have no sh*t to talk about Gwen Stefani putting out a trash ballad with her big stubbly country ham. You dont do something like that unless you’re stupid happy, like this abomination is confirmation that she’s very in love. May we all find someone we’d set our brand on fire for," the tweet said. Good music comes from pain. Bad music comes from stupid levels of happiness.

Although Shelton and Stefani failed to impress, the night was not a disaster for all of the nominated artists. Billie Eilish became just the second artist in Grammys history to win Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year in the same year.

She also gave a beautiful, stripped down performance of "When the Party's Over" from her now Grammy-winning album. Eilish rocketed to success last year on the back of her single "Bad Guy."

The Grammys also featured a couple of tributes, including one to Prince that featured Usher, and another to Nipsey Hussle featuring DJ Khaled and John Legend.

The shocking news of Kobe Bryant's death also hung over the ceremony, which featured several moments throughout the show that paid tribute to him, including the opening moments of Lizzo's performance. The night was a celebration of 2019's music, and of the passing of several legends who were all gone far before their time.
