'The View' Co-host Joy Behar Reveals She 'Almost Died' From An Ectopic Pregnancy

On Wednesday's episode of "The View," co-host Joy Behar revealed that she almost died from an ectopic pregnancy she had in 1979 during a discussion on abortion bans.

In addition to the usual panel of Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, and Sara Haines, the panel was joined by Elisabeth Hasselbeck for the episode that aired on August 3, 2022.

As reported by Page Six, the 79-year-old actress told the panel and audiences watching along at home "I almost died" from an ectopic pregnancy in 1979.

She explained that ectopic pregnancies occur when an egg “is growing in the fallopian tube,” before saying that it can “grow just enough to make the tube burst [and] … you bleed internally, and then you die.” Joy said that she was “rushed to the hospital” and was lucky enough to survive.

“The doctor the next day said, ‘We almost lost you,'” Joy recalled. “I was in the situation where I could go to Beth Israel Hospital, and they took care of it there.”

When Elisabeth asked the former high school English teacher for more details, Joy confirmed that it was "not a miscarriage" and "not an abortion."

Joy took a moment to criticize Republican politicians, including Hershel Walker, for supporting the Supreme Court's controversial decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

“What are these people thinking about when they talk about the health of the mother?" Joy asked. "People like that, they cannot be in positions of power.”

It should be noted that Joy actually has a daughter named Eve, now 51, that she had with her ex-husband, Joe Behar. Although Joy tried to convince her daughter to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, Eve became a ceramic artist.

“I figure, why not use nepotism? Everyone else does,” Joy joked in a January episode of "The View." “But she said ‘No, I don’t like it.’’ Joy also said that her daughter was "very independent," even as a kid.

“She would just not want to wear pants [as a kid] when it was two degrees outside,” Joy explained. “I gave her double leotards and a skirt and that’s how she wanted to be.”

Back in May, "The Stand" actress went on a minute-long monologue about abortion rights on "The View."  Whoopi, now 66, confessed that she had an illegal abortion as a teenager and recalled how dangerous it was at the time before abortion became legal.

“You got people telling me I gotta wear a mask, or don’t wear a mask, or do this,” Goldberg said. “Everybody wants to tell me what to do! This is my body!”

“My doctor, and myself, and my child —that’s who makes the decision,” she continued.

“Women, when they decide something is not right for them, they’re going to take it into their own hands,” she continued. “We got tired of tripping over [other] women in public bathrooms who were giving themselves abortions because there was nowhere safe, nowhere clean, nowhere to go.”

Whoopi explained that the 1973 court decision to guarantee abortion “came about because people wanted people to have somewhere safe and somewhere clean. It has nothing to do about your religion. This is not a religious issue, this is a human issue.”

She agreed with Joy Behar that getting an abortion is “not easy,” saying, “It’s a hard, awful decision that people make.”

Whoopi went on to say, “If you don’t have the wherewithal to understand that, to start the conversation with, ‘I know how hard this must be for you.’ If you’re starting it by telling me I’m going to burn in h---, then you’re not looking out for me as a human being, whether I subscribe to your religion or not, and that is not OK.”
