Former footballer turned baseballer Tim Tebow is officially married.
The 32-year-old athlete tied the knot with Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters in Cape Town, South Africa on Monday, January 20th. The bride, 24, was named Miss Universe in 2017. She and Tebow became engaged almost exactly one year ago, on January 9, 2019 at the Tebow family farm in Florida.
The brief ceremony lasted 30 minutes and the couple wrote their own vows - how sweet. We wouldn't expect anything less from Tim Tebow, though.
Tim spoke to PEOPLE last night as he was still making a few edits to his vows.
“I want the vows to be perfect. I’m leaving in the traditional things like ’till death do us part,’ but I’m also adding some of my own things to it," he said.
The big event started just before sunset. Nel-Peters, a South African native, wore a mix of diamond and pearls from Marion Rehwinikel Jewellery - also of South African descent - and a custom gown from David's Bridal.
Like her jewelry selection, the ceremony was also mixed as it incorporated ideas from both South African and American cultures. But unlike other high profile weddings, this couple specifically wanted their special day to be something timeless.
"We wanted to look back at the wedding and see that it was intimate, elegant, and traditional," she said. "We definitely wanted it to be something that we could look back on and know that nothing was dated. We want to remember this day for the rest of our lives.
Demi had a similar goal for her wedding dress, too. “I was all over Pinterest,” she also said to PEOPLE. “I wanted to find something sleek and elegant and timeless.”
She was the opposite of a bridezilla: It turns out that the wedding cake a was total surprise; neither member of the couple saw it before the reception began. Demi said it wasn't a hard decision, and that they chose to just "trust [their] wedding planner."
The menu ranged from healthy to...healthy-ish? Tim and Demi provided guests with steak, pasta, and mussels galore, but the meal began with the pair's "favorite salad"...this makes us wonder if we should have a favorite salad, too. Tim's groom's cake was a cheesecake, because this way, in Demi's words, "Tim [could] stick to his diet.”
“I’ve been waiting my entire life for someone special, who I can spend the rest of my life with," Tebow said yesterday. "I was waiting for the right person to come along. And now I’m marrying Demi. I can’t wait to see what our future holds. All of my dreams have come true. It was 100 percent worth the wait.”
Any honeymoon plans have not been made public. But, congrats to the Tebows!
