Chris Rock Makes Will Smith Joke Hours After Viral Apology Video

It seems Chris Rock isn't really ready to open up about what it felt like to be slapped like Will Smith just yet, although it seems that the "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" is hoping that his fans will forgive him for the viral incident.

Back in March, Rock was a presenter at the 94th Academy Awards when he made a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her hair loss condition, known as alopecia. Smith stormed the stage, slapped Rock, resumed his seat, and cursed him out. He then took the stage less than an hour later to accept his award for Best Actor Oscar and apologize to nominees - but not to Rock himself.

Although he put out a brief apology statement shortly after the incident occurred, the five-minute apology video the "King Richard" actor posted answered questions from fans and gave Smith a chance to tell his side of the story. That being said, fans want to hear what Rock has to say.

As CNN reported, Chris Rock took the stage in Atlanta on Friday night to continue his Ego Death World Tour. Last week, Rock was performing in New York City, which resulted in the viral video of Kevin Hartgifting him a goat on stage in Madison Square Garden.

During that performance, Rock opened up on the slap seen around the world, saying, “Yeah, that s— hurt, motherf—ker, but I shook that s— off and went to work the next day.” Rock also said that he is “not a victim,” adding, “I don’t go to the hospital for a papercut.”

On Friday night, Rock doubled down that he is not a victim, which may be one of the reasons he declined to press charges against Smith when approached by the LAPD backstage after the event. "Everybody is trying to be a f---ing victim. If everybody claims to be a victim, then nobody will hear the real victims," Rock said on Friday night. "Even me getting smacked by Suge Smith ... I went to work the next day, I got kids."

He later made a joke that he had made back in NYC, saying, "Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face."

In the viral Instagram video, Smith took a moment to address his audience. “It’s been a minute… Over the last few months, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and personal work…” a message on the screen began. “You asked a lot of fair questions that I wanted to take some time to answer.”

When asked why he didn't apologize to Rock in his Oscars acceptance speech, Smith said he was “fogged out by that point” and said that his recollection is “fuzzy.”

“I reached out to Chris, and the message that came back is he’s not ready to talk, but when he is, he will reach out,” he said before addressing Chris directly. “So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Smith also apologized to Rock's family, mother, and brother, Tony Rock, who had stared in the 2007 Smith-created sitcom "All of Us." In the video, Smith recalled, "We had a great relationship," adding, "Tony Rock was my man and this is probably irreparable."

When asked what he has to say to his fans and the people he let down, Smith answered, “disappointing people is my central trauma. I hate when I let people down so it hurts, it hurts me psychologically to know I didn’t live up to people’s image and impression of me and the work I’m trying to do is I am deeply remorseful and I’m trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself. Right? I’m human."

"And I made a mistake and I’m trying not to think of myself as a piece of s--- so I would say to those people, I know it was confusing, I know it was shocking, but I promise you, I am deeply devoted and committed to putting light and love and joy into the world and, you know, if you hang on, I promise we’ll be able to be friends again," he concluded.

Although the Academy is allowing Smith to keep his Best Actor Oscar, he has been banned from attending any Academy events - including any future Oscar ceremonies - for the next ten years.
