The Netflix hit crime drama “Mindhunter” has not been cancelled after two seasons, but TVLine reports that Netflix has but the show on an indefinite hold. Executive producer David Fincher’s busy schedule is reportedly the reason for the production of Season 3 being put on pause.
“David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement to TVLine. “He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”
As a result, the show’s stars — Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv — have been released from their contracts.

Fincher’s slow-burn psychological thriller centered on two FBI agents (Groff and McCallany) and a psychologist (Torv) working withinthe bureau’s Behavioral Science Unit. Together, the trio interviewed serial killers to get a better understanding of their motivations and to (hopefully) solve ongoing cases.
Season 2, which consisted of eight episodes and premiered in August, centered on the Atlanta child murders in 1979-81, during which African-American serial killer Wayne Williams was tried, convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for killing two adult males. Williams, however, was never tried for any of the child murders, 23 of which he was suspected of being involved with.
Fans flocked to social media after news broke to express their feelings over the situation.

“I hate this. The second season was awesome. I know it was Fincher’s baby, but I sure wish someone else could pick it up and keep it going. It really sounds like he’s not into it anymore. This was a truly different take on the subject matter, focusing less on the violence and more on the minds and methodology of catching these killers. It will be missed,” another said.
“Mindhunter was one of the smartest, most interesting series left on the service, and while I get that this particular case doesn’t quite fit what I’m talking about, it hurts to see ‘one of the good ones’ put on pause. I hope Netflix returns to focusing on ensuring that the majority of it’s productions are as high quality as Mindhunter, and as high quality as its subscription base deserves,” another replied.
