'The Bachelorette's Rachel Lindsay Reveals How She Rose Above Reality TV Pitfalls

Rachel Lindsay's place in the 'Bachelor' franchise has moved beyond simply being the subject of a season of "The Bachelorette."

The entertainer, in addition to her work in Bachelor Nation, has also been involved in many other aspects of the entertainment industry. In recent years, the 37-year-old "Miss Me With That" author has worked hard to separate herself from the franchise which introduced her to the public eye.

Lindsay's motivation for creating a sense of separation may in part be due to the frustration she experienced surrounding and in the aftermath of long-time franchise host Chris Harrison's departure from the franchise.

Harrison had famously defended Rachael Kirkconnell, a contestant who had been competing on Matt James' season of "The Bachelor" at the time, after old photos of Kirkconnell had surfaced where she had been in attendance at an antebellum south college party.

Harrison's defense of Kirkconnell had taken place while the former face of the franchise was being interviewed by Lindsay for Extra. After Harrison eventually announced he would distance himself from the franchise, Lindsay began to do the same as well.

"I think what happened with Chris had been the last straw," she later explained in an interview with "Grey's Anatomy" star Ellen Pompeo per People magazine last year, "Because it highlighted for the first time more in a way than anyone ever had before you saw what we go through as people of color are a part of this franchise when it comes to the audience."

The latter part of Lindsay's experience with Bachelor Nation seemed to revolve around the incident with Harrison, no matter how much or how often Lindsay tried to diffuse the situation.

According to one of our pieces covering the incident, Harrison had apologized to Lindsay multiple times, which resulted in Lindsay having to continuously revisit and discuss his actions.

Of Harrison's first apology, Lindsay explained, "I do accept the apology, and I think it's important for me to say that because I haven't really talked about, you know, Chris and the statement, because I'm trying not to make this a 'Chris versus Rachel' [situation]"

Making sure the conversation over the interview, Harrison's defense of Kirkconnell and the resulting implications of her involvement in the situation always remained productive was incredibly important for Lindsay, serving as further fuel for her to step away from the franchise.

"There are a lot of issues that have come up because of this interview," Lindsay went on to say at the time per The Blast's report, "and I think it's important that we continue the conversation, we continue to move forward. I think that's the best thing we can hope for out of all of this."

More than a year after the interview and Harrison's departure from the franchise- Bachelor Nation programming is now officially hosted by 'Bachelor' alum Jesse Palmer,- Lindsay's life has taken a quieter turn, a decision she takes great care in making sure remains so.

Lindsay recently discussed how she and her husband Bryan Abasolo work to separate their relationship away from the often-confining world of reality TV, and how the couple's separation from the public eye has positively affected the health of their marriage on her website, per Us Weekly.

Lindsay had plenty to say about the performative influence reality television has had on their marriage, but was also quick to note she and Abasolo have risen above those pressures.

"In a reality television world that is designed for your relationship to fail, we survived and came out on top," she wrote, before acknowledging the constricting viewpoint of their relationship viewers had previously been subjected to via "The Bachelorette."

"[Fans] want the love story to still play out for their public perception. But our contractual public love story ended on August 7th, 2017. At that point, we decided that we wanted to control the future of our relationship," she explained.

There's no better way to go than forward! The Abasolos are excited for their future, the specifics of which Abasolo briefly alluded to in an interview with Us Weekly's Bachelor Nation-themed podcast a month ago.

"We have a new house, we have our dogs, kids are in our future as well," he shared. "Our careers are flourishing, we're both in a good place," he added.
