In a family as famous as the Kardashian-Jenners, there's probably competition over virtually everything. We've seen these competitive streaks play out on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" for more than a decade now, but that's not the only way that the family offers fans access to their lives.
The stars are also incredibly prominent on social media, and that's especially true on Instagram. Up until now, Kim has been the most well-known and most followed member of the notorious family.
Recently, though, Kylie Jenner overtook her big sister in one major way. Last week, Kylie had 156 million followers, surpassing Kim's 155 million. The two sisters will likely continue to duke it out over which of them has more, but the fact that there's competition for the title of most popular sister is worth noting.
Today, both Kylie and Kim have 157 million followers. For Kylie fans, this has felt like a long time coming, given Kylie's recent success as a mogul.
Of course, although Kim and Kylie are two of the most popular people on Instagram, they aren't the most followed accounts on the popular social media app. That title belongs to soccer star Christiano Ronaldo, who has 197 million followers. Even stars like Selena Gomez have more followers than either Kim or Kylie.
Still, both sisters have found great success by leveraging the platform. They know how to promote themselves and their products through it and make people excited to buy them.
Instagram is likely part of the reason that Kylie was recently named a billionaire, and it's certainly part of what has made Kim's shapewear company Skims a financial success.
Even as both Kylie and Kim use the platform to promote their products, they also use it as an extension of their personal brands. It gives fans a look into their lives from day to day. High follower counts also mean that posts can be their own source of revenue for companies looking to promote their products.

Although Kim's success is the reason that the rest of the family is famous today, Kylie has had more success in her business venture, and is the richest member of the family.
Her makeup line Kylie cosmetics was recently sold to Coty for $600 million. Kylie still has a stake in the company, but this sale allowed it to reach even more people than it did before. Instagram followers may not seem all that important, but it's an important metric of success for both sisters.
