"Tomb Raider" actress Alicia Vikander hasn't had the easiest time in her journey to become a mother. The actress married Michael Fassbender in October 2017 after dating for three years. The duo eventually welcomed a son in September 2021 after facing some issues.
The couple is known for being private, but Vikander recently spoke about her painful miscarriage before welcoming her son with her husband. She described the experience as extreme and talked about her two movie roles where the characters also suffered miscarriages.
The 33-year-old mentioned "The Light Between Oceans," where she met her husband, Fassbender. Her character in the film suffered two miscarriages before adopting a child. She also mentioned the storyline in "Irma Vep," where her character suffered a similar fate.
Alicia Vikander Suffered 'Painful' Miscarriage
Vikander just got candid about how much pain she went through due to a problematic miscarriage prior to getting pregnant and giving birth to her 17-month-old. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the actress revealed that her attempt to get pregnant before her son resulted in an "extreme and painful" miscarriage.
Vikander told the outlet that although they had a child now, it took them time. "Talk about meta," she said. The actress's new show, "Irma Vep," has a similar storyline to the 33-year-old's life. One of the show's characters, played by the "Tomb Raider" actress, endured a miscarriage but was forced to go back on stage to perform regardless.
Vikander also recalled her time on the set of "The Light Between Oceans," a 2016 film where she acted alongside Michael. The duo played a couple with no child that had gone through two miscarriages but eventually adopted a child lost at sea.
She Said The Roles Helped Her
The "Tomb Raider" actress revealed that the movies had a different meaning when she experienced a miscarriage. She said playing those roles and addressing hurtful issues like that on-screen gave her and the audience more strength when handling their respective grievances.
Vikander shared, "[The miscarriage] was so extreme, painful to go through and, of course, it made me recall making that film." She added that she wondered how people, after going through so much, still managed to put up a front and move on.
"Sometimes you go through things that are tough in life, and if you have an office job, you can step away for a bit. But there are times that myself or colleagues have been through something and, well, I can't understand how they went on to the red carpet afterward," the 33-year-old continued. "To be met by people asking, 'How are you doing?' Given what they had just been through? Most people would not be able to step out of their house."
Alicia Vikander Was Lonely
Vikander revealed that at the time, despite seeming like she was at the height of fame and happiness, she felt lonely and often sad.
She recalled, "When, in other people's eyes, I was at my height of fame, I was the most sad. I kept telling myself, 'Take it in. It is incredible.' But I didn't know what to do. There were all these first-class flights and five-star rooms. But I was always by myself. I was by myself,"
The actress also talked about how she and her husband Fassbender could find a way through their hard time and balance their role as parents and their respective careers. She explained, "We do every second job. One stays at home while the other works."
Alicia Vikander Said She Put Family First
Since giving birth to their baby, Vikander has avoided talking about the child publicly or even disclosing the name or gender. She previously spoke to Harper's Bazaar about how she was coping with motherhood and revealed that she always intended to put her family first.
The actress said, "In my little family, with my husband and my child, we travel together, always. That's the rule. We do jobs so one of us can always be with the baby." She also talked about the journey to getting pregnant, revealing that she struggled a bit before the pregnancy.
Vikander revealed, "I tried to get pregnant for a while. So I had tough times during lockdown. I struggled for a while. For a while, I didn't think that I could get pregnant." The actress and her husband live together in Lisbon, Portugal, at the moment, and besides their acting prowess, they're famous for being extremely private.
