Are Miles Teller and Tom Cruise about to replicate their success in “Top Gun 3?”
The sequel to the 1986 original movie “Top Gun,” 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick” was a smashing success and took home over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office in only 31 days, making it the biggest movie of Cruise’s career.
So are they going to replicate their need for speed and put it to use making “Top Gun 3”?
Miles Teller Says Another ‘Top Gun’ Movie Is ‘All Up To Tom Cruise’
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, which took place at a celebrity golf tournament at South Lake Tahoe, Miles Teller revealed that he has had conversations with Tom Cruise about returning for a third movie in the franchise.
When asked by Kevin Frazier if there will be a third Top Gun film, Teller replied:
“That would be great, but that's all up to TC, that's all up to Tom. I've been having some conversations with him about it but, you know, we'll see.”
Frazier also pointed out that this is Cruise’s first movie to gross over one billion dollars.
“Yeah, that's definitely what my team has been, you know, saying for these future negotiations,” Teller joked. “But no... for him to share Top Gun with me and a lot of these other young actors and to bring us into that world, it's just been such a wild ride and it's still going.”
What Does ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Director Joseph Kosinski Have To Say About ‘Top Gun 3’?
In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski seemed to echo what Miles Teller had to say and hint that the future of the franchise came down to Tom Cruise.
“It's all about the story for Tom, and if we can figure out a way to tell what Maverick's up to next, who knows,” Kosinski said.
"Top Gun: Maverick" sees Tom Cruise return as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell to train Naval Fighter Weapons School graduates for a special assignment, although he is still haunted by the ghosts of his past. One of the graduates that Cruise's character is training is Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw, the son of Maverick's best friend that passed away in the first film: Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards.
Val Kilmer also returned to reprise his role as Lieutenant Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky. The sequel was directed by Joseph Kosinski and also starred "Snowpiercer" actress Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, and Jay Ellis.
The movie did gross over a billion dollars, so it's likely that Miles Teller will want to reprise his role for any "Top Gun" future installments. However, he did reveal that he had a shocking health scare on the set of "Top Gun: Maverick" that left doctors very concerned!
Miles Teller Reveals He Had Jet Fuel In His Blood... Literally!
In an appearance on "Late Night With Seth Meyers" back in June, Miles Teller revealed that he had jet fuel in his bloodstream after he started breaking out in hives while filming.
"We landed, and I'm just like, 'Man, I'm not feeling too good,'" Teller recalled. "I was really hot and I just started itching like crazy. So I get out of the jet and I'm just covered in hives — like, head to toe."
The "Whiplash" actor said he took an oatmeal bath to try to calm his skin before heading to the doctor for a blood test. "My bloodwork comes back and I have flame retardant, pesticides, and jet fuel in my blood," he revealed.
Although most people would be concerned, Teller said that it didn't bother him. In fact, he said it was "actually kind of cool" after he felt better. When he returned to the set, he said that Tom Cruise asked him about his blood test results.
"I was like, 'Well, Tom, it turns out I have jet fuel in my blood,'" Teller recalled. "Without even skipping a beat, Tom just goes, 'Yeah, I was born with it, kid.'"
That definitely sounds like something Tom Cruise would say! Hopefully, Miles Teller won't have the same thing happen to him again if he really does return for "Top Gun 3"!
