Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, revealed how a panic attack prompted her to go on a wellness journey in her most recent newsletter.
Since performing with MC Hammer in an episode of "Yo! MTV Raps" in 1990, the pop culture icon, sometimes regarded as a triple threat performer for her singing, dancing, and acting talents, has etched her name in the history of the entertainment.
However, while making her way to the top, the actress deprived herself of rest, which resulted in an unexpected panic attack. Lopez made a choice to start a wellness journey after the shocking ordeal and is now advising her fans on the importance of healthy living.
Jennifer Lopez Thought She Was 'Invincible'
Lopez addressed her followers in the latest edition of her JLo newsletter on the necessity of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and getting adequate rest, recalling an event when she had a terrible panic attack on set after overworking her body for years.
"There was a time in my life where I used to sleep 3 to 5 hours a night. I'd be on set all day and in the studio all night and doing junkets and filming videos on the weekends," she wrote per People. "I was in my late 20s, and I thought I was invincible."
The stress from the constant hustle and bustle and a lack of sleep caught up with her one day as she was sitting in a trailer on set. She described feeling fine one second and then being unable to move the next.
"I was completely frozen," Lopez described the ordeal, adding that she "couldn't see clearly" and was very scared about what was happening to her. The actress further explained, "Now I know it was a classic panic attack brought on by exhaustion, but I had never even heard the term at the time."
A Visit To The Doctor
Fortunately for Lopez, her security saw that she was in physical discomfort. He swiftly took her into the vehicle and drove her to a nearby hospital to see a doctor. She had gained some control of her body and could talk before their arrival but was still shocked at what had transpired.
Lopez asked the doctor whether her shocking encounter meant she was losing her mind. She had never felt that way before, which added to the ordeal's emotional impact at the time.
Lopez recalled, "I asked the doctor if I was going crazy. He said, 'No, you're not crazy. You need sleep ... get 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, don't drink caffeine, and make sure you get your workouts in if you're going to do this much work.'"
Her Wellness Journey
After the visit to the hospital, Lopez took time to rethink her life choices. It dawned on her that she had "let her own self-care needs go completely" while she pursued her career as a singer, dancer, and actress.
Knowing that the consequences would be severe if she continued to ignore such telling signs, the "Maid In Manhattan" star decided to begin her wellness journey. "I realized how serious the consequences could be of ignoring what my body and mind needed to be healthy — and that's where my journey to wellness began," she said.
The triple threat entertainer has since continued to live "to live a very healthy and balanced life," noting for her fans in the newsletter that her wellness philosophy was more about "pro-living" than "anti-aging." Though the actress does not focus on anti-aging, she is recognized for having an ageless beauty, which she credits to the cumulative impact of having a good sleep.
