"The Beatles" drummer Ringo Starr officially celebrated his 82nd birthday on Thursday, July 7!
Ringo was born Richard Starkey on July 7, 1940. The English musician, singer, songwriter, and actor is best known as the drummer for the Beatles.
Did You Know These Fun Facts About Ringo Starr!
Even though he's best known as a drummer, Ringo Starr occasionally sang lead vocals on one song on each album, like "Yellow Submarine." Ringo also wrote and sang the popular songs "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden."
Sadly, Ringo suffered from several life-threatening illnesses throughout his childhood and was frequently hospitalized. Despite this, Ringo held a position with the British Rail before getting an apprenticeship as a machinist at a Liverpool school equipment manufacturer.
In 1957, Ringo co-founded his first band, the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group but later joined another Liverpool group, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, by the time The Beatles formed in 1960. In August 1962, The Beatles asked them to replace Pete Best as their drummer and the rest is history!
After the band broke up about a decade later, Ringo released several successful singles on his own, such as "It Don't Come Easy" and "Photograph." In 1973, he released his album Ringo, which was a top ten hit in both the US and the UK.
Ringo has also been featured in numerous documentaries, hosted television shows, and even narrated the first two series of the children's television program "Thomas & Friends." He also portrayed "Mr. Conductor" during the first season of the PBS children's television series "Shining Time Station. In 1989, he founded Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band and has toured around the world.
In 1999, Ringo was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: first as a member of The Beatles in 1988 and then again as a solo artist in 2015. Ringo was also appointed a Knight Bachelor in the 2018 New Year Honours for his contributions to music.
On Thursday, plenty of fans and famous friends took to social media to wish him a happy 82nd birthday!
