After marrying Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt started quite a large family with her. They've always appeared as the perfect, multicultural family until cracks started to show and Angelina filed for divorce.
The biggest problems seem to be between Brad and his son Maddox whom he reportedly got into a confrontation with on a flight to Nice, France.
It appears this was the straw that broke the camel's back, with Angelina filing for divorce not long after the incident. Things have been stressful for the family ever since.

Angelina adopted Maddox from Cambodia in 2002 before she started dating Brad in 2004. The Hollywood heartthrob eventually adopted Maddox, and the couple created a family together.
It appeared that Maddox really liked Brad in the beginning. In a 2007 interview with Vogue, Angelina said, “It’s a big thing to bring together a child and a father. It had never crossed my mind that Mad was going to need a father — certainly not that it would be this man I just met. Until, of course, I got to know Brad, and realized that he is naturally a wonderful father."
She continued, "And we left a lot of it up to Mad, and he took his time, and then made the decision one day. He just out of the blue called him Dad. It was amazing. That was probably the most defining moment when he decided that we would all be a family.”

On a flight to Nice, France in 2016 things reportedly came to a head, with Brad and Maddox getting into an argument, and it was rumored things got physical between the father and son.
Brad apparently had been drinking the entire flight, becoming more and more drunk as time went on. Things got so bad that Angelina took the children to a separate hotel and Brad went to another location.
Reportedly, it was this incident that caused Angelina to file for divorce. In an interview with GQ Magazine Brad confirmed the separation had a lot to do with his problems with alcohol.

Though they have six children together, Brad will spend Christmas Eve this year with only three of them; Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne.
A source told Us Weekly that Brad is "hoping they'll want to spend the night but he's really just looking forward to Christmas Eve with them."
The publication also reported that this will be the first Christmas Brad spends with his children without a monitor present.
However, his other children, Maddox, Pax, and Zahara will not be attending, so clearly there are still problems in the family.

Maddox has been attending Yonsei University overseas, and Us Weekly has reported that Brad was traveling in the area though he didn't stop in to see his son.
A source told the publication, “Brad didn’t try to see Maddox. There’s been no contact between them.”
The source says, however, that Brad has not given up on having a relationship with his son in the future. They said, “Brad’s hopeful that as soon as his son gets older, they’ll become close again.
Maybe the holidays will help the two bond again, and repair their relationship?
