Following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade last week, there has been no shortage of celebrities voicing their discontent with the outcome. Some have gone as far as to donate to Planned Parenthood and other ways to help people seeking an abortion.
The Supreme Court ruling on abortion led to it becoming legal in several states, with many likely to follow. The decision also put Democrats in a tight spot, and they were slammed for not doing anything to prevent this situation and their weak solemn response after.
"Last Week Tonight" show host, John Oliver joined the multitude of celebrities to talk about the issue. In a recent episode, he spoke of his discontent with Democrats but highlighted the actions of some others.
John Oliver On The Supreme Court's Ruling
In the Sunday episode of "Last Week Tonight With John Oliver," (via Yahoo!)the show's host discussed the recent ruling by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade. The court recently decided to remove the federal protection of a woman who wanted to get an abortion. That decision is now up to the individual states.
The writer started the show by expressing regret because he wouldn't be able to talk about less serious issues due to the Supreme Court's ruling. "I would love to talk about the fact that Beyoncé released a new single or that this flappy king became the first Bloodhound to win the Westminster dog show," he began. "But sadly, I can't do that, thanks to the Supreme Court, which had itself a banner f--king week."
Oliver preceded to reveal his disdain and poor opinion of the several conservatives who supported the ruling and expressed how happy they felt because of the ban. The host didn't stop there; he also admonished Democrats who he thought did little in the matter.
John Oliver Said The Decision Was' Pretty Devastating'
Oliver revealed that he thought the decision was "pretty devastating" and portrayed the Supreme Court as uncaring. "What the Supreme Court has done is utterly devastating," he said. "The message it sends is pretty clear: we don't care if pregnancy kills you. We don't care if you don't want to be pregnant. We don't care about you at all."
The host also mentioned some states who had made abortion illegal and the harsh laws they put in place For people caught in the act. Oliver said, "In states where abortion will now be outlawed, any pregnancy loss past an early cut-off can now potentially be investigated as a crime."
"Which in turn means search histories, browsing histories, text messages, location data, payment data, information from period tracking apps, prosecutors can examine all of that," he added.
The Talk Show Host Blamed Democrats For Their Inaction
Still, on the matter, Oliver revealed that he had more than a bit of rage against the Democrats, who he said could have done more to stop the ruling. The Democrats are currently under fire for what the 45-year-old described as a weak response to the situation.
"There is a huge amount of understandable rage right now, and there are certainly plenty of individuals and institutions worthy of that anger," the comedian said. "We have talked before, multiple times, about how exactly we got here. The years of planning by anti-abortion forces, and the failure of Democrats to effectively mobilize to stop them."
Democrats were also recently slammed due to their attempts to fundraise off the decision of the Supreme Court. Some, however, promised to do everything within their power to reduce the negative effects the ruling could have on their constituents. Liberal district attorneys also lent their support, revealing that they wouldn't enforce abortion bans in their states.
He Commended Some Democratic Responses
Although the 45-year-old is furious at the large majority of Democrats, he commended the actions of some. He mentioned Cory Bush and AOC, as well as the Michigan legislative Black Caucus and their response to the anti-abortion ruling.
"Some like Cory Bush and AOC seem to understand what people were going through," the show host said. "As did, by the way, the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, which released a statement saying, And I quote, 'This is some bullshit' — which it absolutely is."
Oliver further amended that he didn't want just shows of anger from the leaders, but most of their responses have been made with "the solemnity of a funeral instead of the urgency of a f--king cardiac arrest." According to him, politicians like Pelosi are in "stark contrast" to abortion rights activists who have spent years worried about this outcome.
He described the "unflinching commitment and passion" of the activists as something everyone should emulate, especially while trying to help each other go through "the nightmarish haze that basic health care is about to become."
