Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Tells Fans He's 'Renouncing' U.S. Citizenship

It seems Billie Joe Armstrong doesn’t want to be an “American Idiot.”

At a concert in London on Friday night, he slammed the United States and the recent Supreme Court decision to repeal Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed women the right to safe, medical abortions.

On Friday night, Armstrong told his fans that he was moving to the U.K. after the recent Supreme Court ruling, as per Deadline. He told the crowd “F--- America,” before adding that he was “renouncing” his citizenship due to SCOTUS’ 6-3 ruling.

Armstrong was on stage at the London Stadium for his Hella Mega tour along with Weezer, Fall Out Boy, and several other bands. "I'm f---ing renouncing my citizenship," he reportedly told the crowd. "I'm f---ing coming here." The crowd was said to have cheered loudly at his comments.

Armstrong, now 50, reportedly said, “There’s too much f---ing stupid in the world to go back to that miserable f---ing excuse of a country,” adding, “Oh, I’m not kidding, you’re going to get a lot of me in the coming days.”

The Daily Mail reported that he also yelled "f--- the Supreme Court of America" before playing the 2004 hit "American Idiot," which was Green Day's response to the Iraq War and the media coverage of the invasion at the time.

This isn't the first time that Armstrong has been outspoken over his political views.

The answer is neither!

The lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter for the rock band Green Day has never been shy about his political views before. In 2008 and 2012, he supported then-President Barack Obama. In 2016, he threw his support behind Bernie Sanders and then shifted to Hillary Clinton after she became the Democratic nominee. He supported Bernie Sanders again in 2020, and then later endorsed current President Joe Biden when he became the Democratic nominee.

As per NME, Armstong called Donald Trump a “fascist” and a “puppet of the Illuminati” and even compared him to Adolf Hitler after he became President. That being said, in 2017, Armstrong told Rolling Stone that he’s an independent and doesn’t align with any political party.

According to The Week, the “Jesus of Suburbia” singer tried to file to run as a Republican presidential candidate in the next election in March 2021. His band, Green Day, was also designated as his official principal campaign committee.

However, a spokesperson for the FEC told Billboard at the time “just because you see a candidate's name on a filing doesn't mean that person filed the form ... we get lots of false and fictitious filings.”

It seems doubtful that Armstrong will actually run as a Presidential candidate – and even less likely that he’d be able to land the nomination – especially considering he once told Trump supporters that he has “no problem telling ignorant f----s like you to go to h---.”

In more recent news, according to HuffPost, Green Day also performed in front of a banner that read "F--- Ted Cruz," criticizing the Republican senator's response to the recent mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. An 18-year-old gunman entered Robb Elementary School and killed 19 students and 2 adults.

The Texas state Senator has come under fire for voting against the bipartisan gun bill, despite calls for increased gun control.

As Don Harris tweeted last Wednesday, "Ted Cruz just voted no on the bipartisan gun bill. A bill that does not ban gun sales. A bill that does not raise age limits. The guy who was praying with the families in Uvalde just voted no on the gun bill. That is all. No opinion given. Just the facts."

The recent Supreme Court ruling to ban abortions was made on Friday, although a draft opinion had been leaked earlier this year.
