Lou Ferrigno Says The Hulk in ‘Avengers:Endgame’ Lost Its Character

Former professional bodybuilder and now American actor, Lou Ferrigno had some opinions on the recent portrayal of the Hulk in ‘Avengers:Endgame’. The film premiered on April 26th of this year and has been the most profitable Marvel film in history.
Despite its success, Ferrigno wasn’t impressed with how The Hulk was portrayed in the recent film. Back in 1978, Ferrigno played the green-skinned monster called the Incredible Hulk in the CBS television series. In the past years, the Hulk (Bruce Banner) has been played by actor Mark Ruffalo.

If you haven’t seen ‘Avengers:Endgame’, in the five-year gap in the film's storyline, Bruce Banner merges with the Hulk. Banner successfully combined the brains and the brawns after a stint in his gamma lab. In the film, we see the muscular body of the Other Guy, but the facial features, voice, and brains are of Bruce Banner. Marvel fans were intrigued by the new direction of The Hulk, but Ferrigno had another opinion about the monster with anger problems.
At Hamilton’s Comic Con in Canada, Ferrigno said, “What’s happening is that the first two Hulk movies, the CGI was improving, but the last one, Endgame, I was disappointed. Because the Hulk needs to be hideous, he needs to be a creature.”
In the 1978 version of the Hulk, played by Ferrigno, he was a beast that was hard to control and had excessive rage. The first versions of the Hulk in the Marvel films were very similar. Ferrigno felt the new version of Hulk lost its unique quality that separated the beast from the timid scientist.

For Ferrigno, another aspect of the Hulk in ‘Avengers:Endgame’ that swayed from the character was Hulk’s ability to fully articulate sentences and conversation. In ‘The Incredible Hulk’ with Edward Norton, Ferrigno did voice over for the Hulk. He had lost his voice for a couple days imitating the yells and monstrous sounds the Hulk is known for.
He admits,”because [the voice] comes from inside the chest, the strong bellow when the Hulk roars. It’s a challenge, it’s work. But I had to almost yell and talk like the Hulk thinks and feels. And now in this new film, the Hulk is having dialogue conversations, I think it basically just spoiled it.”
He also happens to prefer other actor portrayals of the character.

While Ferrigno isn’t pleased with the new version of the Hulk, ‘Smart Hulk’ or ‘Professor Hulk’ has been seen in previous comics. In 1991, the ‘The Incredible Hulk’ issue #377, Banner’s personality merges with ‘Joe Fixit’ Grey, Savage Green and the Hulk.
After ‘Avengers:Endgame’, it is unclear on how Marvel will move forward with the character and if we will continue to see ‘Smart Hulk’ or see the hulk make a cameo in Disney+ in the series ‘She-Hulk’.
